OK then. Can I just ask which parts you thought were 'fanboyish gripes'. Was it my request for everyone to see 'Brazil'/my claim that it is underrated? (which I believe is true) Was it my nitpicks about 'Shawshank Redemption'? (I never like it when a movie appears to be trying too hard) Or was it my further nitpicks on 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'? (I've tried to tone down on nitpicking, but when a movies so good - just a tiny gripe stands out much more)

Nicholson's best performance IMO.

I agree, although he was hilarious in 'The Shining' - but I dont think that was intentional...

I think he's meaning in general, your reviews here didn't contain much griping. I agree Night Owl, Mr. Butcher gives some fantastic thoughts/opinions about certain things, when his inner ranting doesn't fog his mind.

I have to say One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest is my favourite from Jack Nicholson, though I did enjoy The Bucket List.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Limitless
great film

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Knocked Up
Hilarious movie. They kind of gave the vibe that Pete was wrong, though, I don't think that he was. And I thought it kind of sucked that

Spoiler (click to read)

Ben got responsible at the end, I kind of wanted him to just go back to his life getting high and watching movies.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I ordered Tron from Netfix, and the disc was COMPLETELY cracked in half!
But I think it's a good movie, with horrible special effects

Effects are the high-point of this film, don't judge it just by looking at the cover, go watch it.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

It's actually just the opposite. The effects make this film, the story doesn't mini/cat

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Also, remember that Tron was made around the time CGI effects were starting. For it's age, the effects were great.

Oh, haha, I assumed he meant Tron:Legacy mini/sweat My bad.
But still, having seen the original Tron too, it has quite nice effects for the time it was made.

In which case, you may like my Rotten Tomatoes Reviews, which are (slightly) more sincere - although I couldn't resist doing an 'Avatar' and a 'Batman: The Movie' review (I wrote the 'True Grit' and 'Paul' ones when the movies came out in the UK, but just now I changed some grammar errors on both). I hope to do these regularly. If you think they are superior to my more informal reviews here, I can just write my reviews on RT and re-post them here.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Pretty awesome, had some clever scenes, too. The ending was kinda annoying, though, imo.]

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Meek's Cutoff

Pretty good. While not much in terms of actual narrative substance, it felt like a film that depended more heavily on its sense of scope, which it did well. Nicely shot and evenly-paced, sort of like a 2001 for westerns.

I enjoy reading your rants and reviews here on BiM, but these are superb! You manage to get across all your thoughts/opinions without being (too) biased (excluding 'Paul'... and 'Avatar') and I found the reviews extremely interesting to read, actually. You have a way with words. However, please keep your formal Rotten Tomatoes reviews on that site, and your informal ones here, because that's what we know and love you for. mini/wink

Rio

We went to see it for my brother's birthday. Blech. Classic cookie-cutter story, it's making me sick. People need to come up with something new.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I like Max's rants too.

Danny Boyle's Frankenstein
OK, yes, it's a play, but I saw a video of it at a cinema, so it counts.
Anyway, it was !@#$ amazing. Johnny Lee Miller did an amazing job as The Creature, and it was undoubtably the best take on the story I have ever seen. Bennedict Cummberbatch did a great job too as Victor Frankenstein. Him and Miller switch roles each night, and I'd love to see him play The Creature too.
If there's a cinema playing it near you, definatley check it out.

Alice in Wonderland (Burton Version)
Goofy effects, story sidetracks from Lewis Carrol's sequel, just creepy.

I've seen it before, and the real reason I liked it was because the special effects were so bad. It made me want to giggle. It's not a bad movie but Star Wars still is better. lol

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Battle Royale

I didn't think a film with this much blood could tell such a compelling story. The ending was a bit lame, but the rest of it was all brilliant.

Norwegian Wood Two grown-up Japanese films in one day, I know right?

This film played itself as really clever and artsy, but to me it felt like it was trying too hard. For example, sometimes there was no audio at all and the shots were so long with a blurry background that wasn't quite blurry enough. The plot just went on and on though; I'm normally good at long, slow-paced movies but there were at least three times where I thought 'Ah, that's the end of the film' (and the actual end of the film wasn't one of them).

Inception Ah, here's something a bit more mainstream.

You know, the reputation this film has is of a brilliant, action-packed sci-fi movie, and it certainly is. But I was really surprised to find that it's actually a touching love story. I would have cried, but the people I was with... yeah. Brilliant (albeit slightly obvious) ending though. Blade Runner called.

You saw a Tim Burton movie, and sound disappointed/displeased with the fact that it was creepy? Did you know what you were getting yourself into? I don't think it's humanly possible for him to create anything that has nothing gothic in it. But yes, the new movie is pretty poor.

I love Cumberbatch, he was amazing in the 3 pilot episodes of BBC's Sherlock Holmes and I look forward to seeing him in the next series.

I've been wanting to see that for a while now, but I can only find the sequel on DVD.

How did they ever make a movie of Facebook?
Awesome documentary on the making of The Social Network. Cool to see how perfectionistic Fincher is.
