Topic: HD Export

Hey. Lately I've benn thinking that it would be better to make my films take up the whole YouTube screen. But when I export my 720p movie it shows up on the screen as just a medium square surrounded by the black. Why isn't it taking up the whole screen. And also is a DV avi file supposed to take up the full screen? Is there a certain setting I should export my films in order to get them to take up the whole YouTube screen?

Re: HD Export

Hm, I'm not too sure, but it would help to know what software you're using. It sounds like all you're trying to do is make your films widescreen, so instead of shooting at a 4:3 aspect ratio (640x480 etc.), you want to create a film in 16:9 (640x360 etc.). This is probably best to do when you're taking the frames, but you can quite easily crop it in post production. But in order to explain how to do that, we need to know what software you're using.

Re: HD Export

I think it all has to do with your personal monitor resolution, as far as the YouTube screen. Say your monitor is 1920 by 1080 or something, but mine is 1440 by 900.If you made your video in 1920 by 2080, it would take up the whole screen on your computer, but since on mine it's a different aspect ratio, there's some black space on the sides. You understand I'm plugging random numbers in for the resolution (except for my monitor) but I believe the concept is still the same.

Re: HD Export

I use Pinnacle 14 for editing and I use MonkeyJam for capturing. My capture size is 800x600. Are there any options I should mess with or what should I do?

Re: HD Export

Hm, well, for one of my animations (this one, I think), I exported my final movie in 1280 by 720, and that seemed to take up the entire screen. And I think 800 by 600 isn't the best quality to work with, especially when you want 720p. 720p means 1280 by 720 I believe, but I just took a quick glance at a wikipedia article, so I might be a bit off in the definition.

Re: HD Export

So I should make my frame 1280x720? Or my film?

Re: HD Export

Technically speaking, since you are filming at 800x600, you would need to crop the footage to 800x448. Then you could export as NTSC DV widescreen at 1280x720p or 1920x1080p however they do not affect your quality of the film at all.

Re: HD Export

Don't alter the original footage unless it's for creative reasons. You'll be chopping off the quality by scaling it up.

Re: HD Export

Here's how I do it:

1. I film at 1600x1200 in MonkeyJam

2. I import my video into my editing software (I use PowerDirector8).

3. I crop it into 1280x720.

4. I export it in MPEG-1 format and upload it to YouTube.

Re: HD Export

Does it matter whether I crop the video?

Re: HD Export

The whole point is to crop it.

Re: HD Export
