Re: The CGI Thread

well, it would be best if you just get blender 2.5, it comes bundled with python, so it's ready to go right out of the box.

but if u don't do that, here's what you do:
make sure u get python 2.6, not 2.7
make sure the bit thing (32 bit or 64 bit) matches the version of blender that you got.  if you got the 64 bit blender, get the 64 bit python, if you got the 32 bit blender, bet the 32 bit python.

hope i helped mini/bigsmile

..well... let's look at the CGI face I made. I think it speaks for itself.

I found out i must scale upwards! I'm going to get the mouth actually animating mini/bigsmile

Re: The CGI Thread

Nice!
You just need to give the edges of the face a slight blur.
About .6 to 1 pixels should do nicely. mini/smile

I think so, too. Beveling the bricks will do a great job. And maybe add a cloud Texture to the surface to make the perfect stones a bit dirty .. like real ones!

How do you create lego bricks in Blender?

C910 is awesome. Gonna try to post an animation EVERY WEEK! SUNDAY or MONDAY!

DarthSparky, you have to be more specific on the question. Making LEGO bricks in Blender or any other program is far more advanced then what you think. Anyways, most people don't actually make their bricks in a 3D application-they usually build their models in a program called LDraw, which you can download at the LDraw site. Then, to export it, some people use the LDraw>Blender script (Like myself), but some other people export through LeoCAD. I for one, however, don't like how LeoCAD exports; My suggestion would be to go with LDraw>Blender script for exporting (You can read about what the script does a couple of pages back). For animation, texturing, shading and rendering, you then use a program like Blender for that. If you want to know how to model bricks in Blender, without any of the CAD programs, it's just a simple extrusion of a cube with some added edges and faces.

heh heh. That's funneh. That would make a good avatar for someone. What software do you use for CG faces?

Re: The CGI Thread

He uses Blender for the faces. Not bad Mason, though you should make the face a little larger, to fit the perspective of the minifigure's head.

Re: The CGI Thread

I just started fooling around with zbrush. Obviously it is a program that can't be matched for modeling. Anyone else here have experience/recommendations on where to start?

Re: The CGI Thread

I've never used anything other than Blender.
Is Zbrush free?

Re: The CGI Thread

no no no
Zbrush is a prestigious modeling software whose pricetag will make you perspire
JamesW i would think experimenting would be best it is a modeling software after all no direction needed
however i have seen good articles in 3D magazines
u could check those out

Here's a work-around explanation for on-set particle system rendering.

Re: The CGI Thread

Ooh, that's quite cool Lech. I really like the idea of rendering it out with while and black to make the different types of explosion. I've never really done much with the opacity maps and all that, but what you did looks like it works very well.

Here's a lego castle I've been working on for the past few days:

Re: The CGI Thread

That's a very nice model, budgetstudios, but I certainly hope that this isn't the final render. If it is, then there should be some better color correction, ambience, texturing, DOF, etc.

Re: The CGI Thread

Thank you Juggernaut. This is a test render without any post production. Though i'm not too sure what you mean by adding texturing and DOF. Wide shots don't usually have DOF, and what would i texture the lego pieces with?

Well, Blender is free and open-source. It's what I use and I like it a lot. Carrara is about $350 or so (depending on which version you get), Maya is a ton more money, and 3DS Max is also tons of money.
