What the hell was up with best score though? I mean seriously, if David Fincher got best director then that's OK, but best original score? Over Alexander Desplat and Hans Zimmer?
Not quite sure what you mean here- it almost sounds like you intended to say you were confused that it won the award over two well known composers, but Reznor and Ross are hardly new on the music scene. I liked the score for The Social Network; it was flexible and emotional without strictly adhering to the more common threads in film score composition. I don't really see what's so surprising about it getting a win. It's all opinion, of course, but I personally can't say I was shocked.
As I've said before, the score for The Social Network doesn't work for me as much by itself, but coupled with the film (as it should be judged), it's incredible and a great companion.

Randy Newman wasn't eligible this year, since the score for a sequel can't count as an "original score."

And I guess that he did get best song. So I'm happy for him.
And "True Grit" really got screwed with 10 nominations and 0 wins.
Agreed, although I thought there were some flaws with the character development that lead me confused as how to interpret the story. But its technical aspects were brilliant none-the-less.

That's can't be true. Prisoner of Azkaban, Aliens, Return of the Jedi (and Empire Strikes Back, if I'm not mistaken), one of the Star Treks, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Return of the King were nominated and/or won an Oscar for original score.

Was really hoping Roger Deakins (Cinematography)* and Hailee Steinfeld (Supporting Actress [but we all know it was a lead performance...]) would win last night, but for the other categories, it just wasn't the right year for True Grit.
*But I'm still happy for Wally P. Well deserved.

Colleen Atwood. I'm a fan.
I was kind of expecting her to win best costume design, they were really creative costumes.
Double Post: Also I wasn't really expecting The Kings speech to win 
but maybe thats just me.
I always knew it would be down to either 'The Kings Speech' or 'The Social Network'. Personally, I think the latter will be remembered in 50 years time (and is my favourite film of 2010) whilst the former will be something only the most hardcore British cinema snobs will remember. I guess the Academy doesn't have a Facebook...

Agreed. Hailee Steinfeld and Jeff Bridges could have easily won an Oscar - it just happened that 'The Fighter' and 'The Kings Speech' came out too.
Oh, and there are way more better films than 'Gone with the Wind' and 'Titanic'. If your turning this into a celebration of movies can you....uh....celebrate the movies? Steven Spielberg was by far the best speaker in how he mentioned that most great films only get nominated for Best Picture.

Most likely, come to think of it. But I still think its an excellent point regardless of its true intention.
Just remember, a film doesn't have to win an Oscar to be a good film. <Words of my dad and some other person<

As I heard it, Randy Newman didn't submit the score from Toy Story 3 for consideration.
In my honest opinion, Oscars, Golden Globes, Cannes etc. are the same thing. Just prices. And anyway, they can't make a choice that seems fair to everybody. Just the fact that "Robert Crumb" didn't get a nomination for best Documentary feature back in 1997 (I think) because they watched only the first 20 minutes makes, for me, the oscars less credible. To me. And I sincerely don't think many things have changed. Matt Damon was nominated last year for a role where he really didn't do anything outstanding, and even if he didn't win, he could have. I still think he's a good actor.

Naturally. It's a group of people voting on the winners, not a wide-spread democratic process.

Call the 2012 winners now and see how it pans out.
