Re: The OSCARS Thread - 2011
A fairly predictable list, but I'm happy to see John Hawkes and Jacki Weaver up in the Supporting categories, both were marvelous in their respective films. Also glad to see Exit Through the Gift Shop nominated in Documentary Feature, but surprised to see Waiting for Superman left out.
The biggest shocker by far, though, is Inception being left out for Best Director and Editing, both of which they greatly deserved (more so than its Original Screenplay nod, which I thought was one of the weaker aspects of the film). Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure those two snubs kill whatever chance Inception had at Best Picture (not that it had any chance, but it's no longer a leading candidate). Another small shocker is the absence of Andrew Garfield for Supporting Actor (The Social Network). I thought he was almost a shoo-in to make the cut, but I suppose not (John Hawkes is a good replacement, though, so I'm not too disappointed).
I fully expect The Social Network to take this handily, despite The King's Speech winning the Producer's Guild. TKS was a good film with fine performances, but hardly the best of the year. Plus, other than that one precursor, The Social Network has pretty much cleaned up everywhere else.
Also, I think True Grit may have gotten a little too much love from the Academy. I mean, it was a fine film, but I don't think it was worth 10 nominations.
