Topic: New tests

I haven't done any animation in months due to getting new software/hardware. So now I've got everything I thought I'd do another test montage. These were mainly to:
A) test out the quality on my new camcorder (WIDESCREEN!!! mini/smile)
B) test out all my new apps (istopmotion and FCE)
(so basically to test out animating on a mac)
C) try masking in Gimp
D) practice some new camera movements and techniques.

Also, I know the masking test isn't great, stupid gimp changed the brightness of each frame.
And, thank you to all the people here who subscribed to me. It means a lot, I really appreciate it. mini/bigsmile

Re: New tests

This is pretty good, except a few movements were a little slow and jerky, but the masking was fine to me.

Re: New tests

That was a very impressive test montage. It looks like you have everything working for you. Though, I do agree with jstudios that some of the animation was a little too slow and jerky; the masking was fine, but the flicker was caused by the shadow of the rig that you erased. Everything else was solid (especially that 24fps test). Good work.

Re: New tests

I agree with the slightly jerky animation. Strange thing was is that all these tests were shot at (with the exception of the 24fps test) 15fps, and I even added 1 extra frame into the walk cycles. It also looked smoother in the preview in istopmotion, but the animation looked a little jerkier after rendering/exporting. I'm going to be using 20fps a lot more soon, so hopefully it'll look smoother.
Its also weird with the masking, the frame didn't look any different in gimp, only after exporting it. It was origonally brighter, but I added a filter in FCE to darken it a bit.
Thanks a lot though guys. Any other opinions, critics, or comments? I'd love to hear them. mini/wink

Re: New tests

One thing you need to remember is that videos play at a set framerate. For example, YouTube converts anything uploaded to 25FPS, which (in the case of 15FPS videos) means it adds "double" frames to compensate for the missing frames because of the higher framerate. This might contribute to the choppiness of your animation.

Having said that, it looked pretty smooth but a bit slow. Your first smoothness test especially felt like everything was happening a bit too slowly (apart from the running away at the end).

Re: New tests

Oh yeah, I heard about that with youtube. That would explain it then.
Anyone else got any suggestions on how I could improve, or comments? I'm still new to macs, so has anyone got any tips?

Re: New tests

very well done !
