Re: What was the last movie you watched?

There Will Be Blood

I guess it wasn't that bad, but I really can't say that I liked it. I felt like there wasn't any story, and that some of the scenes just ambled along without much of a point. Spoiler: There is a scene in which Daniel Plainview and H.W. (what did his son's initials actually stand for?) were camping at night, and the only thing that the scene established was that Mr. Sunday beat his daughter if she didn't pray. This fact is only mentioned once more in the film in passing, and nothing ever comes of it. I felt like most of the movie was like that. ]

And why did they have to call it "There Will Be Blood?" I was expecting a lot of blood from a movie that's rated R for violence, and has a title like that. But there was a surprising lack of it. The book it was based on was called "Oil!" and I think that would have been a much better, more fitting title.

I did like how the filmmakers captured the feel of the early 1900 hundreds, but I think I would rather watch a documentary about the history of the oil business. I do think that Daniel Day-Lewis made a really good performance, and was worthy of the Academy Award that he won, but it just saddens me that this movie was nominated for Best Picture and 3:10 To Yuma was not.

Never So Few

Quite a good film. I'm surprised that it hasn't been remade by now.

WALL-E

Yep, I almost cried. God that was a great movie.
Aside from cgi humans in the movie that was the most realistic cgi I've ever seen. PIXAR is great.
Also, Ben Burt did on awesome job on the sound design, as he always does.
Great story too. They've got an epic team of writers.
Glad I got to see this movie finally. mini/bigsmile

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Hairspray.

It was okay. It didn't deserve all the hype it got

Hello... It's been a while, hasn't it?

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Frost/Nixon

An intelligent, excellently-written drama. I liked how the film neither portrayed Nixon as a villain or a victim of negative press, but as a man burdened with the guilt of failing in his responsibility to America and getting away with it, and, similar to the angry American public, can't find it within himself to move on. It neither berates nor defends him. The final interview scene was fantastic, probably one of the film's top highlights (along with Nixon's drunken phone call to Frost]).

Frank Langella was great, as was Michael Sheen (it seemed like Sheen portrayed David Frost as a man who wasn't comfortable in his own skin, and I wonder if Frost was actually like that). However, the one area where the film falters is in the development of its supporting characters, something that, for example, Milk did a fantastic job of doing (with the exception of Josh Brolin's role).

Three BP nominees down, two to go before the Oscars.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I've been watching long epic movies lately.

Lawrence of Arabia
I have not seen this before... shoot me. It was pretty good. I watched it in two sittings cause I didn't really have the time. Not knowing anything about history or the story in general, I was surprised about some of the things in the movie, but eh, I'm an ignorant American, what do I know. This is one of those films that the filmmaker portion of my brain turns on and I think about how they did stuff or where they went or what lengths they went through to do something. It was very entertaining as both a film and something to analyze.

Ben-Hur
I've always loved this movie. Even though it is a little longer than I feel it should have been, it is really fun to watch. I love the chariot race (as most people do) and this was probably the first time that I watched it and compared all the things that George Lucas stole and put in the pod race. Another scene I've always been fond of was the boat scene; I had never noticed before that there's a man with out a hand in one part and another has a guy with out a foot. All in all, this movie deserves it's mass amounts of Oscars, though I'm not completely sold on who should have gotten 'best supporting actor' from it.

I think There Will Be Blood is an amazing film, but a very unconventional one. I liked it a lot more the second time I saw it.

Correction: The Coens' funniest film is Raising Arizona, for sure.

A really good film. Sad ending too, I almost cried. Too bad it wasn't nominated for best picture though mini/confused it should have been.

O rly?

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Bicycle Thieves

Such a simple film, but so well told, and very moving. I watched it with subtitles, which didn't cover all the dialogue, but I understood the story perfectly nonetheless. Highly recommended.
