Topic: Making your Frames Interesting

Well, recently I've had a thought, how can we make a frame in a brickfilm become interesting from starting from a simple one? Well, that's what this thread is about. How you can get a simple basic image, with a standard object like a minifigure, and making it interesting. What I'm going to do is post a simple image, then I want people to give suggestions on how that frame could be interesting. The main point about this thought was that it could help newer member or people who are having trouble trying to get their film to look nice. So, here is a very basic image:

Now, the character is walking towards the camera, but you have an empty shot, so what should you add to make your shot interesting? What props? How could you get the lighting? what could you change about the background? What time of the day should it be? Where should it be? Suggestions in this thread are open. So I'll ask everyone once again, to say what you could change, and then I will put that in the frame and show you how it looks, we will keep doing this until we have a nice looking frame. members that are new will then understand and think "Now I can make this shot look far more interesting, this could make my film look better". So let's go!

Nice idea, though.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

No, this isn't the same as that.

I think how the frame looks really depends on the context. I couldn't really say much about the frame as it is right now.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

Yes, this is very different actually. Now can I have suggestions? mini/tongue

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

You could give it a different camera angle, maybe a closer up shot of him. the lighting could be more interesting and in this frames case especially a little bit less bright. for set design you could add a bench and maybe a lamp post. Also in post Production you could add rain if this is meant to be a sad scene.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

That frame looks very bad as it is. First of all, the background burns my eyes and takes away all the focus. That guy is dead in the center of the frame and the shot is boring when I look at it. What I would do to improve it? Tear down the set and try again.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

If you were going to make the shot looking dark and scary, you could tone down the lighting a bit. Add in some fake ivy, close down the camera angle so that isn't so open. Add two parallel walls(as a side street) add some bins and some waste slopped over the floor.

Definitely do something to give the shot depth - some clutter in the foreground, walls either side of your guy, something like that. At the moment he's just walking forward into nothingness. I'd choose more muted colours for the background wall too - ideally your character should be more interesting to look at than the scenery.

Get the camera more off the floor.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

I can't stand sets that have multiple, bright colors. White, tan, or grey for me, with a little accent thrown in for good measure. Change the angle of the camera; don't have the character as the center of attention. Add some props, and have something for him to be walking away from, like an elevator, or a painting.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

Abdax posted a helpful thread on cinematography (lighting).  I would check that out for sure.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

I honestly think these suggestions are great, but there's a minor problem. I forgot to mention the mood of the frame (silly me). The mood is meant to be happy, I'll make these changes soon, but now just yet. Sony Vegas just arrived and I have to install it. mini/smile . Keep the suggestions coming, but make them happy ones.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

Well, you maybe could add an hot dog stand or something.
If you walk along the street, you will se many things who makes our world intresting.
Maybe you could build something of that you see. mini/wink  In lego of course.

That's a ctually a really good suggestion. I'll try it.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

Is it on a street? Because if it is, you should rebuild that set. I've never seen a street that colour.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

How detailed/"interesting" the set is would completelty depend on what context it's in, you know. There aren't magical ways to make the set twice as interesting, which is where your common sense comes in handy.

Re: Making your Frames Interesting

I would put a bench on the right, and a door to the left with a streetlamp to the right of it.
