Re: The OSCARS Thread - 2011

I think it's weird that Hailee Steinfeld was nominated as a supporting role and Jeff Bridges was nominated as a lead role; I have read a few arguments for these placements but I still feel like they're pretty blatantly inaccurate.  Jeff Bridges as a lead role is borderline though it makes enough sense, I guess, but the whole narrative is centered around the girl.

Re: The OSCARS Thread - 2011

I'm very glad John Hawkes got a nomination for Supporting Actor. The only words I can use to describe his performance are inappropriate for this community.

Somewhat sad that Polanski and The Ghost Writer are completely absent, and Inception deserved an Editing if not a Director's nomination. The King's Speech is a nice film, but it didn't really need Editing along with everything else it got. But whatever, it's just the Oscars.

I'm quite pleased with the Oscar nominations to be honest. But no love for Shutter Island? mini/confused

Re: The OSCARS Thread - 2011

The only ones I've seen out of those are Toy Story 3 and True Grit, and both of them are great. But True Grit is probably the best movie I've seen in the past 5 years.

Re: The OSCARS Thread - 2011

My take on the animation portion of the Oscars:

-No Animated Feature Oscar nomination for Gorō Miyazaki's "Tales From Earthsea"
(This is his first animated feature with Studio Ghibli and also Hayao Miyazaki's son. Hmmmm....?)

-No Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination for "Tangled", but a song nod?
(Seriously? Even with the newly created techniques and renderings tailored for the film it still gets snubbed?)

-No Oscar nods for "Waking Sleeping Beauty"
(Okay, so I'm bias on this one. I can understand why it didn't get a nod with the film using old footage. But come on, even "Dream On Silly Dreamer" didn't receive a nomination.)

-No Oscar nod for "Despicable Me"
(Surprised about this one. Golden Globe nod, but not an Oscar nod.)

-Toy Story 3....total of 5 Oscar nods for Best Animated Feature, Song, Best Picture, Sound Editing, & Adapted Screenplay.
(Surprised at the multiple noms. Especially the Best Picture nom.)

Eh, like Asteroid said...it's just the Oscars.

Meh. There weren't that many good films this year. Ture Grit, Toy Story 3 and what else?

I hope How to Train your Dragon will win best animation. It was just awesome in terms of the animation.

Re: The OSCARS Thread - 2011

Hmm, no Scott Pilgrim in the music categories. Kind of disappointed about that; I really enjoyed its soundtrack. Of course I could contend that it might have been nominated in other fields as well, but these are the Oscars so it was kind of a given that it wouldn't be.
