Short answer: Check this out.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Just bought the 550D/T2i it's being shipped currently.

I just got a kit lens with it just now but I'll have to shop around for macro lenses when I want to animate.

Nice work!

What would a SONY XR 500V be considered as? a DV?

No it seems to be an HD camcorder. It doesn't seem to have a firewire output, but it does have an HDMI output so you still have a chance to use it with a Blackmagic Video Capture Card. Though if you use a laptop without HDMI output, I am afraid you are out of luck.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

I've animated an incredibly short test to see if there is any flicker

I didn't notice anything that bad really however it is rather short. I aim on making a small film over the next week to get a better idea of what it's like.

Oh man, that looks great, I need to get one (my QuickCam and iMac don't co-operate). Was that taken with the lens that came with it?

He said he used the standard 18-55mm lens that comes with the 550D/T2i Pack. Though investing with a macro lens from Nikon and a lens adapter on the 550D's body definitely is a good investment.

Ah, of course. I would also suggest the prime 50mm lens from Canon. 1.8 maximum aperture is great for portraits and shallow depth of field.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

That looks nice RP.  I didn't notice any light flicker.  All the films I've made so far have been with the 18-55mm lens and it seems to work quite nicely.  Enjoy your camera mini/bigsmile

Re: Animating with a DSLR

I use the T1i (the T2i's predecessor), so I can relate to this.  I use the standard kit lens, which limits me in the range of shots I can take, because its focus does not go that close, but I found flicker is almost nonexistent, and only very little when filming in changing lighting.  I will be interested in where you go lens wise, and have only one suggestion.  Though I haven't yet gotten this, an adapter that fits in your battery pack is necessary.  You can only film so long on one battery, and so often I have been caught half way through the scene when my battery dies, of having the battery need charging before filming, and losing the time spot I had to animate in.  On my forty second THAC entry, the battery died twice, causing three filming sessions.

Also, what frame capture software are you using, if any?

@ BWJC
If you purchase a battery that plugs from the camera directly into a wall outlet, you wouldn't run into your problem.
