Topic: Animating with a DSLR

Hello, Hoogle here!

My animation hiatus will shortly be coming to an end as my next semester at college will be starting soon and I will have an animation class. Therefore I will finally be forced to animate which is what I've needed for a while. My current camera I use for animation is an old Panasonic GS300 which I used for The Dentures which sadly has a low low resolution. So I'm in the market for a reasonably cheap DSLR that should be good for animating.

I've only briefly animated with a DSLR by taking photos directly to the memory card then compiling them later in editing software so I'm unsure about compatibility with animation software.

Anyway to get back to the question of this topic. What should I look for when I'm buying an SLR for stop motion and does anyone have any recommendation?

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Best value for money DSLR on the market right now would be the Canon 550D/Rebel T2i. I grabbed one a little while ago, and I'm very pleased.

Some information on DSLR's that I'll pass on from Mobiledeli, who shoots with a Canon 7D, is to grab a Nikon lens adapter and get 28mm and 50mm manual Nikon lenses, as there's a mechanism in the Canon lenses that doesn't always reset perfectly and can introduce flicker into animation. Also, close focus filters are essential.

I'd recommend Dragon Stop Motion as well, for capture.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Thanks for the advice. Does that just go for Canon cameras?

Also should I also look into HD Video cameras? Does anyone animate with those?

Re: Animating with a DSLR

As I have said before...

"In stop motion you take 100,000 photos, so over time this on a DSLR the mirror will seize up. Because the Mirror system is contantly doing this in Stop Motion. You also can not get it replaced because it has a warranty on the number of photos you can take before it breaks.

Bare in mind that 4/3 do not have the mirror system, have reasonable macro shots and live view, and are smaller than others."

Stop Motion Pro has some great advice (although I would go for AnimatorHD it is a lot cheaper than Dragon StopMotion).

Re: Animating with a DSLR

I've not heard of mirror seizing up problems. Has anyone ever had it can it be confirmed? Thanks for the lens link.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Whatever DSLR you choose, make sure it supports tethered shooting if you want to use it with animation software.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

My nikon d60 after two years of use had the mirror problem.
It was unable to take photos or chnage settings.
The camera just dies bassically.
Nikon charge 200$ to fix this somewhat rare problem.
Howver on some different forums many have experienced this problem.
Anyways for a camera i say go with the t2i, 50D and dragon stopmotion

Re: Animating with a DSLR

If I was animating through tethered shooting (which I would do) Would this remove the mirror issue?

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Not unless you kept the mirror open, no.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Thanks for the help. I probably will save up for the Rebel T2i. I've been wanting to shoot in HD which that can do. I've been needing an SLR for photography which that can do and I've been wanting a new camera for animation. So I aim to get that. I'll look into the lenses more soon.  Thanks for the help.

Now if my computer would turn on I'd look into new animation software.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Good choice. As I said before, I highly recommend Dragon Stop Motion for new animation software to go with a fancy new camera.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

A question about the EOS 550. It's called the Rebel T2i in North America but in Europe it's just called the Canon EOS 550D here. Is there any particular difference or is it just named Rebel T2i to fit in with marketing canon?

I'll probably try get Dragon. I will have enough money in my savings for the 550 though it will mean looting my savings.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

The only difference is the name/badging.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

That's what I thought. I'll need to see if I can get the Nikon lenses that have been reccomended before I seriously consider purchasing it.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Ebay will be your friend. I need to invest in some of my own when I actually have some monies.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

I recommend AnimatorHD - a lot cheaper than Dragon on basic versions.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

Okay I'm seriously contemplating buying it soonish. I'll probably aim to get the body only. Since I want this camera for Photo's and HD Video too I'd imagine I'll have to get two lenses. Does anyone know much about shooting HD with SLR's what lenses should I consider?

Re: Animating with a DSLR

When I bought mine I could only afford the stock lens that came with the body (18-55mm), so unfortunately I can't speak from experience on that front other than to say that the stock lens is certainly workable although not fantastic.

Re: Animating with a DSLR

I've found this site http://dslrfilm.com it's certainly helpful. Caters for filming with DSLR's not animation though.

What do you think about the Rebel T1i?

If there are differences, what would they be?
