The Apartment (1960)

I KNOW I've seen bits of this movie before. I dunno if my sister had it on one time or what, but it was fantastic to see the whole thing.

It had a very slow, almost stuffy atmosphere, which worked well with the stifling situation C.C. Baxter (played to perfection by the awesometastic Jack Lemmon) found himself in. I absolutely loved the visual of endless rows of people in an office building stretching behind Lemmon in one scene, and a similarly endless row of benches in the park when he is forced to stay out of his apartment.

The only people who really mattered to Baxter in this vast, impersonal world were the bosses he had to please to achieve early promotion, and the girl who worked the elevators; thus, when these factions got mixed up, he had to choose between the two. Sprinkled in, of course, were the amusing interactions between Baxter and his rebuking doctor friend from the same building.

I also liked the little continuity bits, with objects such as the tissues, the razor, etc. The screenplay felt reserved yet carefully and cleverly crafted.

Billy Wilder was kind of an effing genius.

Gone in 60 seconds
Ehh... Not the best, but not too bad either.

Death Rides a Horse
Wow, this must be Quentin Tarantino's favorite movie ever. So much stuff from this was also done in Kill Bill and Inglourious Ba]sterds.
This movie was awesome, by the way.

Nice; I hadn't noticed the similarity before. Wilder is amazing.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Psycho(1960)
Creepy and too-horrorish for my liking. A great story and lots of nice camera movements in the actionsequences.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Expendables

Its a plot light, explosion heavy action flick with some homage to the classic 1980's action movies, almost as many explosions as a Michael Bay film, and with almost every major action star from the 80's.

Thats it. Its nothing more, nothing less than that statement. It doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is (*cough*Avatar*cough*) and it lives up to what it does claim to be. It never takes itself too seriously, but doesn't transcend into self-parody.

But, it has the worst thing an action movie could have: Hyper Editing. STOP USING THIS TECHNIQUE!! WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON WHEN YOU DO THAT!!

But, who cares? IT HAS ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, BRUCE WILLIS AND SYLVESTER STALLONE IN THE SAME SCENE TOGETHER!!! A Chuck Norris and Mr T cameo would have made the cinema explode with awesomeness. Sure....it only lasts a few seconds and is completely pointless......but......WHO CARES!?! IT'S ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, BRUCE WILLIS AND SYLVESTER STALLONE IN THE SAME SCENE TOGETHER!!!

We get very little character development. Heck, Mickey Rourke had the most development, and he shows up in only two scenes. Seriously, this is the guy who makes 'Stormbreaker' salvageable - give him a bigger part!!

Oh, and I love at the end how even when everyone is dead and everything has already blown up, there is one little hut left that they still blow up. Why? WHY!?

Its not perfect. Its not quite a throwback to the 80's....but its really entertaining. Its worth your time, but if you want kickass action with Schwarzenegger, Stallone and Willis.....just watch either 'Commando', 'Rambo' or 'Die Hard'.

-(since I HATE my middle name, I'm no longer going to sign off with my initials. I was going to use 'MB', but that will confuse with the other member called 'MB'....so I wont use it)

I'd classify it as a psychological thriller, not a horror.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Psycho could be classified as a lot of things. A drama, thriller, horror film, etc.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I classify it as amazingly awesome.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Oh yeah, that's an option too. mini/tongue

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Psycho is a masterpiece, and created by THE master.

According to my friends, Transformers was better than Psycho.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I remember liking Psycho, but that was a while back. I've never really felt the love for Hitchcock.

Let me list some stuff I've seen recently.

Ugetsu
Excellent film by Kenji Mizoguchi. Manages to be a chilling ghost story without being corny at all.

The Story of the Last Chrysanthemums
Another Mizoguchi film from the late 30s. Elegiac story about a Kabuki actor and his lover. The atmosphere creating by large sets and atmospheric lighting is great.

High Noon
Didn't like this so much. The ending is corny, there's way too much music, the whole thing is very contrived.

Lancelot du Lac
Very minimalist film about the Knights of the Round Table. Not as good as some other Bresson films I've seen.

Woman of Tokyo
Silent film by Yasujiro Ozu. I liked it.

The Goddess
A Chinese silent film that was kind of a downer, and not as subtle as some of the Japanese work from the same period. Interesting social critique.

Mystery Train
Excellent Jarmusch film. Kind of a bridge between his early work and Night on Earth. Great color cinematography.

I quite liked High Noon, pretty corny indeed though.
Watching Asian cinema? I've been watching Asian movies myself.
So far I've seen: The Chaser, Oldboy, Symptathy for Lady vengeance, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo and Tokyo Drifter.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Check out Mizoguchi and Ozu by all means.

Sure, you should check out Chan-wook Park.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Percy Jackson (The Lightning Thief)

It was fun, an average Hollywood film, but nevertheless fun. I quite enjoyed it.

Gangs of New York

3rd time watching it. Still a fantastic movie. Daneil Day Lewis is an amazing actor.
