Topic: Walking Test Issue

Hi, everyone. I did my first official walking test. Now, I've run into some problems. The light-flicker and set-movement I can fix.

Now, I'm using After Effects. The composition is set to 15fps and the video playback is set to 15fps. I've copied the walking cycle from Picturesque, which is also shot in 15fps. However, my animation plays quite fast, and I can't understand why and I was wondering if I could get a hand.

Thanks.

Re: Walking Test Issue

how many frames is your walkcycle? cause that was fast, but it looks like 15fps
Also, you may want to be careful of reflection, if you watch the black wall, you can see you hand (i'm assuming that is what it is)
not bad though

Re: Walking Test Issue

yeah, your walk cycle needs more increments.

it takes my guy like 8 frames to go from one stud to the other, yours takes 3.

Re: Walking Test Issue

I copied the exact cycle from Picturesque. I think it's 6 frames long. It looks just fine on that film, though. mobiledeli, do you think you can e-mail me the .mov file of your cycle?

EDIT: Upon reviewing my cycle, I noticed that After Effects ate out a few frames. I'll do a new test today so you guys can see the difference.
EDIT2: I was aware of the reflection even before I started taking pictures but, since it was just an animation test, I didn't give it much thought.

Re: Walking Test Issue

yeah the reflections no biggie

Re: Walking Test Issue

Hey, just got your e-mail. Yeah, the only problem with yours is that you're shooting at 24, and I'm at 15. As I said, I'll do another walking test and see if the frames get all connected nicely.

I'd like to get some more feedback/tips, if possible.

Re: Walking Test Issue

Fixed the frame skipping on After Effects! Here's what I really did..
Again, ignore the flickering and the two left steps =P

BUMP
Just wanted to show you guys the lighting I kind of wanted for this shot. I can get it with my new camera mini/smile

I am going to mess with the lighting a bit, to get it exactly how I wanted, a bit lighter. But just a bit.

Re: Walking Test Issue

pretty good. but you need a light hitting the back right of the minifig to separate him from the black background.

Re: Walking Test Issue

Yep, I know. This was just a small test for the camera. Thanks for your input mini/wink

Re: Walking Test Issue

A walk cycle should have 1/3 frames of the frames in the framrate e.g. 15=5 18=6 24=8 fr walk cycle. It's not necessary, but I've noticed this in frame rates.

Re: Walking Test Issue

vim,
interesting thats a pretty great study. although i think you should add one to each of those. i find 9 looks great at 24 and 5 may be too little for 15.

Re: Walking Test Issue

I used a 5 for this one. It looks pretty decent. I'm still experimenting with some things and, when I wip up a new walking test, I'll vary between 5, and more frames per cycle.

EDIT: According to a calculation I just did, if we're using 9 @24, we should use 5.625 @15. So, 6 should be good. I use 5 frames (from idle to frame before idle again).
This is an interesting study I'm willing to spend some time on.

Re: Walking Test Issue

I ran into this problem too, try slowing down the frame-rate specifically for the walking sequence, that or just take more pictures with smaller movements. I hope this helps mini/smile

24fps.

Re: Walking Test Issue

Wow. mobiledeli, I know you are busy with your Lego Egypt movie but whenever you have the chance could you please do a slow-mo of that walk cycle? I would just like to see where you have the minifig placed for each frame, because I have no idea how to do that.

Re: Walking Test Issue

i just move it the smallest little bit each time.

ill throw a slow mo up.
