I did attempt that but it didn't work very well. I was probably going about it the wrong way or something.

Just simple masking. It's not that difficult. 
Yup. Basically just some masking, as well as putting some layers on overlay and grain merge

I've been working on this for a while now. I wasn't really pleased with how it turned out 
MAN! Yoder and some other people can do some AMAZING things! I am totally shocked

there should be a lot of glow where the lines come together
I don't think there need to be a lot of glow, just a little. My problem is the background doesn't really look space-y. The stars are too equally apart. Mess them around a bit.
... I don't think they are supposed to be stars. Who said it was space?
They are not meant to be stars.
It's just meant to be a tutorial, one of which I actually tried myself. It's more to get familiar with stroking paths and making them glow in special ways, I actually used the technique to make my desktop wallpaper.
