Topic: The CGI Thread

Here is the official CGI thread where people can either post their CGI creations, ask questions about CGI, and where other people can answer them!  This is a good place to also have other's critique your CGI models and give you advise.  A good tutorial on the basics of CGI (using Blender) can be found here.

Here are some useful tutorials to help get you started with different CGI programs:

Getting Started with Blender

Getting Started with Carrara

Getting Started with Maya

Getting Started with 3ds Max

Getting Started with Cinema 4d

Ah, you beat me to the thread-making! mini/wink

I might (will) post a lot of questions here.

Re: The CGI Thread

I'd like to know if there is a way to blow things up in Blender? And if you can make Laser effects?

Basics of blender. How to make parts of a fig move and such. Thanks!

Search Blender for Physic simulation, and laser effects as in fast moving glowing lines?  Blender has a halo feature for glowing effect.

Start with Blender tutorials go get the basics of Blender.  Animating a figure in general can be done in two ways: object hierarchy or rigging.  Object hierarchy means a part being a child or parent of another part.  For example: a hand is the child of an arm, an arm is a child of the torso.  The torso is the parent of the head.  The pelvis is the parent of two legs.  You move the arm, the hand moves with it.  You turn the neck, the head and any child of the head moves with it but not the arm or body.  Rigging involves building a bone structure and the parts of your fig is attached to it.  Animation is done using that rig.

Thank you Lechnology! I'll look on blender's tuts online for more help too, thanks.

We actually have written a Carrara tutorial on this.  You can view it here.  There is actually also another basic CGI tutorial there if you need to know some basics.  Hope this helps! mini/bigsmile

EDIT: Here is a CGI test we did with trains (we apologize for the low quality) -

Re: The CGI Thread

That is fantastic BuildersBrothers! The train has great detail! mini/bigsmile

Re: The CGI Thread

I don't know anything about CGI, but that looks fantastic BB!

Re: The CGI Thread

Thanks!  Actually, we found the train on Google Sketchup, saved it as a 3ds file, edited it a bit, and then just animated it and put smoke!  It really wasn't that hard to do, but the overall effect we really liked and want to possibly use in a future work.

Re: The CGI Thread

Does anyone possibly know how to make particles fade away instead of just dissapear after a set amount of time? I understand that most people here are new to Blender, but you never know if a more experienced person knows the answer.

Re: The CGI Thread

When we need our particles to fade away, we simply insert a fade-in transition in our editing program.  mini/wink  There is probably a way though to set the particles to get more transparent over a certain amount of time though.

Re: The CGI Thread

I don't think that would work very well for what BG is talking about.

I haven't figured out a way to do it in Blender, though.

Re: The CGI Thread

I think I know how to do it in an editing program though. Just render one animation of it with the particles, and then another one without them, then it's a simple matter to make it fade in any editing program. The only problem is how to do something like a slow burning fire, where the particles fade as they get higher in the air.

And here is the latest rendering of my little robot! I know about the blackness along the "wrists" and between the eyes, it will be fixed later on.

What causes that blackness? mini/confused

Re: The CGI Thread

When two faces overlap each other. I don't really know the reason, but that's what it does if the overlap and the faces are exactly in the same spot.

Re: The CGI Thread

I just modeled this Lego figure in 3D Max. It currently has no texture, no lighting no nothing. Can anyone please give me some constructive criticism on what I can improve on?
