Re: The Video Game Discussion Topic!
I wouldn't compare LBP to NSMB. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a remake of the classic Mario games with higher visuals, but same gameplay.

NSMBW isn't a remake and it doesn't need to have radically new gameplay to be a good game. Not having radically new gameplay is kind of the point. . .
Naming it New Super Mario Bros is a little misleading then. And the 'old-school/classic' gameplay features have to go, its been 30 bloody years, can't they come up with anything else.
And I'd also like to say that comparing LBP to NSMB is stupid, becuase LBP is infinitely times better than Mario.
Why is that? It's not as if they haven't come up with anything else. Look at their 3D titles, Super Mario Galaxy for example. And clearly the old-school gameplay is a hit with consumers and those who enjoyed the original titles, otherwise it wouldn't be selling.
The only reason it's selling is because it's tagged with Mario. I really don't have a clue why their Mario rehashes are selling so well, I suppose people are idiots.
And if you're only going to take the "well it's already doing well, so why bother doing anything new", you will never get anywhere. The Wii sold extraordinarily well because it was such an innovative gaming experience, Nintendo could do so much better if they started up a whole new franchise and got everyone pumped and excited about it.
But Nintendo are only gonna be announcing another Mario, Zelda and Metroid game at E3'10, because that's all they've ever done.
Don't forget the millions of Pokemon games.
I have done possibly the most sensible thing evar
Got rid of Modern Warfare 2 for the PS3
Also I'm going to be purchasing BattleField; Bad Company 2 soon, so that shall be alot of a fun, espacially after the amount of fun I had with the first Bad Company game at my mate's house.

I think I'll go for a little cheat session on BF1942. If anyone has the game, any map suggestions?
By the way, I have online so maybe I could catch a match with one of you sometimes

My fav map on 1942 is El Almein, get "god" mode and put as little players on your team as possible so the other team has about 50 men, fun stuff.
Got H.A.W.X. on my PC today, works a dream on maximum settings.
I need a PC game-pad I'm looking for a wireless one.
Oh, and by the way I have a 5770 hopefully going to be in crossfire soon.

Well, you can't expect everyone to share your opinion. Have you ever considered the fact that you might be in the minority? Seriously, it's just a game, and there is no point getting all ticked off about it. I haven't really played it enough, but I've heard that one of the key selling points of the game is the fact that it takes the old style Mario games, and takes it to a multi-player platform. It may be nothing too exciting if you just plan to play it solo, but for families and friends who like co-op games like that, it's a big thing.
Meh. Miyamato needs a Brain Wave. What about an open-world game Like GTA or Just Cause except with Miis and you can play online with each other and there's weapons and there's vehicles and stuff like that. I'd love to blow my little sister's Mii's head off while she screams and runs into her bedroom crying for my own pleasure to then go around destroying everyone on the list and doing missions completely wrong like a thief and making everything for wrong and making the entire world a mess of dead bodies and ccrashed vehicles and fire and other crap and explosions going every second and the only survivor is myself as I have mastered the complex gameplay by steeling things made by people to build a time machine and travel through time to survive and kill people in the past so that existence never existed at all and everything is a huge black hole and THERE ARE NO SURVIVORS BECAUSE I MADE IT THAT WAY AND I HAVE DESTROYED EVERYTHING POSSIBLE AND MADE MY OWN NEW KINGDOM WHERE EVERYONE JUST DOES WHAT I DID IN THE FIRST PLACE CAUSING THE ENTIRE WORLD TO BE HAUNTED BY BLOODTHIRSTY MERCENARIES THAT LOOK LIKE CUTE PEOPLE WHO ARE ONLY USED TO PLAYING SPORTS LIKE A COMPLETE SOFTY AND THERE ARE MORE RIOTS THAN ANYONE COULD EVER IMAGINE IN THEIR ENTIRE DREAMS ALL PUT TOGETHER TO MAKE HAVOC ON THIS PLANET SO THERE ARE NO SUVIVORS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The most violent game ever available for any platform ever.
Riley, you seem to have ignored my point that they have indeed made Mario games with new gameplay. You're creating a false dichotomy; games of both stripes can be created and be of good quality.
Also, disagreeing with the bulk of the market over the quality of classic Mario gameplay means that you disagree, not that people are idiots.

The more I play MW2, the more I realize how broken the multiplayer is, and lately only little 11 year old kids play it, I just go on to make fun of them. RED DEAD REDEMPTION.
Red Dead Redemption looks like it could be one of my favorite video games ever.

Yeah they have, but what 4, maybe 5 times? There are something like 70-50 Mario games, all of which pretty much use the same 4-5 gameplay mechanics from the original Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros. 64, Super Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. Nothing has changed since then apart from gameplay and graphical enhancements.
And as Littlebrick has already said, families and kids like having multi-player games which they can all get involved in, why not give them another selling point and get more people involved.
Also, disagreeing with the bulk of the market over the quality of classic Mario gameplay means that you disagree, not that people are idiots.
I don't really think the bulk of the market still enjoy mario games as much as it used to. The best selling Mario game on a current gen console is still only half the number of Super Mario Bros units that were sold on the NES 25 years ago. NSMBW has seen a 400% decrease in sales from the orignial SMB. Gaming has grown over the last 25 years, and so you'd expect the sales of the games to increase too.
And the point about the rehashed and relabelled games still being fun is devoid. If you're the best, or capable of being the best, what is the point in only staying a few yards ahead of the pack, when you are capable of being miles and miles beyond anyone else?
I think I didn't make much sense at points in that. I'm pretty tired, so I'm gonna leave it at that.
I think Nintendo is one of the most talented and smart gaming companies out there. Which is both a gift and a curse.
A curse because we get rehashes like NSMBW. NSMBW could've retained the same solid core formula, while expanding and doing something new. Multiplayer co-op is not new. LittleBigPlanet did the same thing before. LittleBigPlanet also has a robust level-editing tool, character customization, and a great story mode I'd say would be equal to many Mario titles.
Why is that? It's not as if they haven't come up with anything else. Look at their 3D titles, Super Mario Galaxy for example.
Super Mario Galaxy is original, fun, and retains most of the same mechanics of Super Mario 64. It's unfortunate that we can't see the same creativity in all Mario games. Nintendo is obviously capable of so much more than what we got with NSMBW.
Seriously, it's just a game, and there is no point getting all ticked off about it.
I know it sounds juvenile, but gaming is a passion of many. When the leading company doesn't put effort into all of its games, people are bound to get upset. At least the people that can see what is happening.
I know businesses are out to make money, but when you have companies like Nintendo and Activision* who seem to be only out to make a quick buck at the expense of the industry, you have a problem. Nintendo has re-released their old games as "new" with only minor adjustments and upgrades. They allow trash and shovelware on their platform because they know it will sell like hotcakes.
Many people, like me, love to play games, and it sucks when you know things are going downhill on the creative side, and you can't do anything about it.
*For the record, Activision is A LOT worse than Nintendo, but they seem to share some qualities.
EDIT: NSMBW also lacks online play. I know the average Wii player doesn't care, but when Nintendo doesn't include a STANDARD featured in almost every game...that just screams laziness.
