Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Oh wow, Tarantino fundamentalists mini/lol

Kill Bill is full of quotes (sometimes really brash) from the films of Sonny Chiba, Bruce Lee, Meiko Kaji, or the asian action cinema in general. If you know the films, you can see where Tarantino took "his ideas" from.
The films behind Death Proof only a few fans of the american and european exploitation film of the 60s/70s know. It's not so easy to mention them, but he always helps you a bit (for example Vanishing Point).

For Kill Bill see this video (some scenes...)

I love his films, I just don't like the terminus "genius", which implicates that he fell from the sky. He just watched hundreds of strange films, which he now puts together. For me a part of art is always copying, so it's nothing bad or evil. Most people just never admit it.

Hmmm, I guess Tarantino admits it ? He expressed his love towards the Sonny Chiba films in True Romance.
Doesn't really matter actually, to me, he still has his own peculiar style and creates awesome movies with great dialogue

The Guardian.

Not bad.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The whole point of Kill Bill was to pay homage to both kung fu movies of old and add his own style. It's loaded with references, lines from movies such as those you mentioned because its supposed to be. Grindhouse is likewise, its an all out tribute to exploitation flicks.

I happen to be on this side of the 3d argument. I think that it has the ability to create a much more immersive experience if used as a storytelling device.

How could you possibly use 3d as a storytelling device?

Also, color and sound caught on WAY faster than it's been taking 3d. 3d's been around for decades.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I've always wanted to see somebody subtly play around with the distance between two cameras in order to make objects appear larger or smaller.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Tried it before with 3d. Doesn't work. With 3d, everything is relative till your eyes feel like they're being ripped out of their sockets when you move the cameras too far apart. mini/eek

Alice in Wonderland
Really brilliant. The effects were stunning and it was very well acted. When I saw Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp) walking across the table like that I was just thinking "this reeks of Jack Sparrow." mini/tongue . Unfortunately, some of the scenes were very predictable.

Spoiler (click to read)

When she was saying the 6 things in the ending duel it was so obvious 6 was going to be "I can slay the jabawalky" Or Jabawokki or Jabawocky or whatever you spell it like

But most of it was good and I think Burton did a great job.
I also disagree that the plot sucked. Wasn't AiW one of the first book/films to use the forgotten hero with destiny? It's Alice in Wonderland! I think it was a good simple plot for Burton to be able to focus on other details as well as the story to make the film great (Unlike a certain "Avatar" which took Cameron way too long to end).
4.5/5.

A Serious Man

This film was really hilarius, seriously Big Lebowski funny, by far the best Coen Brother film sinds I saw The Big Lebowski, it's just typical Coen Brothers but at their best, I don't want to say much about it withouth spoiling anything.
Although if you deside to see the movie, wait until the very end of the end credits, there is a joke put there by the Coen Brothers, just check it, VERY end of end credits.
My dad luckaly dragged me to see it, and I wanted to see Alice In Wonderland, *slap myself*

I loved A Serious Man, though I think it's far better than Big Lebowski. I'd kind of place it more in the category of some of their philosophical work like The Man Who Wasn't There or Barton Fink. A lot of the better humor in it is really subtle, though I have to say that the scene in the boat makes me laugh uncontrollably.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The boat scene was like, "woooah???"
But funny.
The bar mitswa scene was definatly the best one.
I also loved how it looked, great cinematography, they really got the 60's look.

No. The film wasn't a straight adaptation, it was supposed to be a sort of pseudo-sequel. Which is a smart move considering the original didn't really have a plot at all, and certainly not one that involved a forgotten hero with a destiny. It's been a while since I read the book but from what I remember it was basically just a series of encounters with strange characters, and in the movie it's those sequences that shine, when Burton takes a break from the basic story to have Alice encounter someone odd.

When I say the plot sucks I mean that it's disappointing rather than rubbish. The plot is not especially bad, it has just been done before, a lot, and often better.

(Oh yeah, and A Serious Man is straight up Coen Brother's brilliance. It's such a different film from the likes of the Big Lebowski or Blood Simple that you can't really compare them, it really comes down to taste whether you'll prefer one over the others.)

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Mad Max
I didn't realize that the second movie (The Road Warrior) was the one known for the brilliant car chases, so I was expecting them to be better. I wasn't really disappointed, though, because the story was actually quite interesting, and I forgot about the car chase hype, and just watched the movie. It was actually really good.

Spoiler (click to read)

I respect Alan Moore a lot less after seeing the bit where Max cuffs the guy to the car, hands him a saw, and tells him that to escape, he has to cut through his leg, or be burned to death. I mean, pretty much the exact same thing happened in Watchmen. Yes, I know this kinda thing has been done before in horror movies and such, but the way it was done here was way too similar. But meh.
