Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I do see where your coming from (although despite the tremendous force behind the knife - its still moving so slow that you can get out of the way). But I still think the knife is stupid. Surely there would be another way to have your climatic battle other than THE GIANT KNIFE OF DOOM!! I know  the gun was ripped off.....but a knife? And if the guys as bada$$ as Cameron makes him out to be, he would have just got out and gone Reb Brown on all of them? If the guy runs out into the open machine guns blazing without a mask, I dont think he's going to worry about one Navi. And dont tell me a man as bada$$ as him goes into battle WITHOUT A GUN ON HIM. All it would take is one shot to kill them.

And I know that he's a bad-guy and so needs to be an idiot or else he will win, but surely there is a better way other than a freaking KNIFE!

Brick Lord wrote:

So...you hated Avatar  because there was an overly bad-a$$ army guy and floating mountains?

Yes, because both of these sum up the movie perfectly. The overly bada$$ General shows how 'subtle' this movie is, and the floating mountains show how stupid the movie is. I'm sorry.....but how do mountains float? I know this is supppsed to be a 'fantasy' world, but there is fantasy and then there is bullcrap.

And dont even get me started on the guy running the corperation. Cameron must have spent many sleepless nights thinking about how may ways he can convey how much of an idiot he is. He even has his own little putting thing, just to show what an idiot he is.....thats hilarious!

Uh, the umlaut in the title is incorrect. It's funny you would have written it that way, kind of as if I had taken the title of a Dutch film and changed "o" to "oo" and added "je" at the end. mini/tongue

Oh ok, I saw it like a week ago and I thought it had the ¨.

It's also a totally wrong use of the diaeresis (Trema in german). You use it to pronounce two adjacent vowels in two separate syllables like in Citrn. No adjacent vowels in die Welle (the wave) so no diaeresis. Quod erat demonstrandum.

PS "ë" is not a german umlaut. There are just ä, ü and ö mini/yes

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Frankly, I thought the knife was badass (Watch The Hunted to see how awesome knife fights can be).

I might be reading too far into the movie to answer this, but according to the Avatar wiki (yes, I know), the mountains are able to float, in short, due to the magnetics of Unobtanium in the ground. If you don't buy that, then try to remember that this is a fake planet that has different fundamental properties than Earth (one to bear in mind, lower gravity).

Avatar

Well, this is hard. You see, going into the cinema to see this movie after hearing all your guys debate made my decision harder. I have decided though, I really did enjoy this film.

One of the aspects that I thought was amazing in this film was the sound design. It's completely flawless. From the noise of people running through the forest to every flap of the Banshees, it's perfect. I didn't think every scene of this film was good. There were some bits that just weren't so great, and I agree that the film did just go on and on, but at the final battle at the end I thought "This is amazing." What they can do with the Special Effects these days is amazing. I went to see the 3D version of the film, and what I found funny was once I took my glasses off and I could see the CG in the Na'vi, like, as if it were unfinished, but it looked fine with the glasses back on.

I wouldn't watch this film again, because of the length of it and there have been better stories. But there's one thing about this film I really appreciate James Cameron for. This film will go down as a classic. I have never really got to say that. You see, modern films at the minute are starting to disappoint me. You get all those Love films that are all the same, these films people are making about Hannah Montana and stuff, but remember when there were so much good movies you could look back on. Star Wars and Indiana Jones are two good examples (Although unfortunately Lucas has eventually turned from Film Mastermind to Crackpot) and they're films that had a great story and took the films possibilities at the current time to the limit. Avatar, in my opinion, has done this. It's taken a fairly plot and turned it into something that can be looked back on.

Overall I give this movie 9.5/10.

I don't mean that it was beautiful as a piece or film or beautiful as a work of art. It's just...

Very funny, but is really sad towards the end, I watched it with my dad.

That movie has the worst ending ever. 'And they woke up and it was all a dream' is just a cop-out for when writers have dug themselves into too deep a hole and can't find any way out for the characters. If it was all a dream, the last hour and a half of your life was just wasted not watching what was really happening.

Yes, I was just voicing my opinion on the movie, rather than that scene in particular.

An American Werewolf in London

lol, that was awesome, and I wouldn't mind seeing it a second time because the quality of video I saw it on was absolutely horrid. I watched it on a VHS tape that looked like it had been through the mill, I'm not even sure why I kept watching it. I couldn't even see all of the awesome make-up very well. But anyway, I finally saw it, and it was hilarious and horrible at the same time. I'm pumped for The Wolfman now. mini/bigsmile

I thought he was meant to be given another chance. That he was sent back to that point and it was only his mind that made him think it was all a dream.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I kind of get what you mean, Hazzat. Apparently there actually is a phenomenon known as "Avatar depression" where people want to live in the virtual world so much that they get really sad about it. Definitely sounds like something that will be written about quite a bit in some circles.

I don't think you can make a statement about film as a medium if you're only looking at mainstream commercial films.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I dont want to live in a CG world where there are giant deadly beasts, an evil military trying to wipe you out, and blue women who have more mood swings than a drug addict. I get enough of that from my own world thanks.

Night Owl, is there something wrong with liking a mainstream movie? All you drone on about is all this Independent, Art-House Critic stuff...as if everything else sucks.

Yeah seriously, just stop doing it. It's so annoying. We can say one small thing about a movie we like and you'll come in and spoil everything.
