I suppose I need some kind of 'Avatar hate blog' on my website - but this is the really the only place I can post my opinion, if you care or not. And bear in mind my website gets less than one veiw a year.

I could just see how much work went into each shot. Even without that, this is still one of my favorite movies now. Great filmmaking.

5/5

I love the cinematography in that, but I've kind of come to wonder if it had any purpose. It's kind of odd in the way it portrays a bleak story full of violence in such a beautiful way. I'm not sure whether I can accept that. Thoughts?

Well, I heard it was based on a graphic novel (surprisingly). And that in the book it was more based on the imagery than the story, so that's why I think they went off on the cinematography so much.

The most beautiful movie of all time.

What?! No. That would honestly be like calling the pictures on a calendar the most beautiful photographs of all time.

I've tried too many times to sum it up Avatar in a few words, but ending up with a whole novel. Here goes:

Avatar: Stunning visuals, enjoyable action, BULLS**T PLOT!

In my opinion; its not beautiful. Its more subtle than a Queen Amidala costume. I have hilarious visions of James Cameron sitting in deep concerntration thinking "how can I make this movie's themes and message more obvious? Lets have a bada$$ General who needs to bench-press every 5 seconds and spout every bada$$ action cliche from every bada$$ film in cinema history so that we know how bada$$ he is!! And if thats not enough, we'll give him that Mec from 'District 9'! No! Thats still not enough! Lets give the mec a KNIFE!!"

I love how the movie doesnt even try to be subtle. Its like 'Commando', only whilst that movie was an hour and a half of Arnie doing what he does best, this is three hours of James Cameron yelling in our ears "DESCRIMINATION IS BAD, THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME, I AM JESUS"

And I dont give a crap about 'Pandora'. The name itself sums up how stupid the enviroment is. I cannot relate to an enviroment where there are MYSTICAL FLOATING MOUNTAINS! WHY!?!?! HOW IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE!?!

The MYSTICAL FLOATING MOUNTAINS sum up this movie. Thats my solution to my problem. If I could sum up Avatar in one sentence, its "MYSTICAL FLOATING MOUNTAINS!!" I cannot express how dumb the floating mountains are. The only thing dumber than MYSTICAL FLOATING MOUNTAINS is this movie.

Rant over. Remember - its just my opinion. I am not saying anyone elses opinion is wrong, I'm just saying my opinion is different.

MOVING ON:

Indiana Jones 4: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

I never thought this would happen, but I actually like this movie more every time I watch it. I just accept the weird storyline and stupid moments and just enjoy the movie. It doesnt hype itself up, it doesnt pretend its something that its not (unlike a certain OTHER movie) but its not without its plotholes. And the ending is ridiculous - but the build-up is actually really well done, so well that the final act is dissapointing. I had no problem with 'the indestructable lead fridge', but it was moments like when Mutt is swinging with monkeys and when Indy refuses to graverob a knife - both of which are entirely pointless that made me feel negative towards the movie.

Basically, the problem I have with this movie is two words: George Lucas

Ah Lucas. How far you have gone from a cinema god to an overconfident, self-indulgent millionaire with far too much money and creative control. Do I even need to rant about you? Anyone who has watched "Star Wars: The Clone Wars Movie" will know all about you.

Oh, and whatever you do, DONT MAKE INDIANA JONES 5!! You are incredibly lucky that Indiana Jones 4 was well received. But I guarentee you that a sequel wont be as lucky....

So...you hated Avatar  because there was an overly bad-a$$ army guy and floating mountains?

What's wrong with a mech having a knife; are mechs not allowed to be used in hand-to-hand combat? I thought that was one of the coolest parts about those things. Seriously, guns aren't really all that practical in close-combat, which I guess these guys were seeing a lot of with the Na'vi, so I thought a knife was pretty logical.

Lol, I thought the knife was ridiculous - I wasn't able to take the film seriously at all after that.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
It was alright. Fireball effects were rather cheesy IMO, you can tell it was moving across a 2D Plane and shrinking a bit; as opposed to actually moving on a 3D Plane (which some films are able to execute almost perfectly). I found the fight scenes to be unrealistic. For example, he probably would have gotten something sliced off in the first CTF Swordfight with Annabeth.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Oh yeah, that CTF match had me groaning. I would have believed it better if he had stood in the water while fighting Annabeth, because he is supposed to be more powerful in the water. The thing that bugged me most though was how they all just stood there and let him act all big and powerful.

I never said there was anything wrong with it before, I was merely saying it shows how bada$$ the guy is. But now you mention it - there is something wrong with it.

Actually, I would say a gun would be better. Imagine if the mech had a huge machine gun strapped to it. A machine gun can fire about two bullets a second (I'm not a gun expert, so I'm just estimating), but I'm sure in this 'technolgically advanced world' there would be guns even more powerfull. Think, if a gun constantly fires over two bullets a second - the guy would be dead within about three. The fact he is swinging a knife around means there is a long delay between swinging and impact (a mech is incredibly heavy and slow - surely it would have been better to just jump out of the mech and fight 1 on 1 if your going by your logic?), giving the enemy ample amounts of time to move out of the way. This is like in a PS1 game where to kill the final boss you just move out of the way when they swing at you and then hit them whilst they are laughing manically or catching their breath. Is this really trying to pass as a decent climax to an 'epic blockbuster'?

And its NOT close combat - the mec is far bigger and most of the time they are both standing quite a bit away from eachover. Close combat would be within two feet at equal height - there is no such thing as close combat when you have a mech over four times the height of a human, thats NOT close.

Surely a better climax would have been the mech starts firing with a machine gun, but then it gets disabled by some other dumb CG creature, and so the General is left to fight the guy 1 on 1. THAT would have made more sense, and would be more original/intense. Trying to kill someone with a knife weilding mech moving at one mile per hour is like trying to run the guy over with a van. And for a military who throughout the entire movie has pretty much been like: BLOW STUFF UP!! BLOW STUFF UP!! BLOW STUFF UP!! IF IT MOVES BLOW IT UP!! this is very old-fashioned.

It's also a totally wrong use of the diaeresis (Trema in german). You use it to pronounce two adjacent vowels in two separate syllables like in Citrn. No adjacent vowels in die Welle (the wave) so no diaeresis. Quod erat demonstrandum.

Umm...that DID happen, remember? He had a big gun and then it was ripped off during the fight. The knife was merely a backup weapon that most army guys carry, so it made sense the robot would have one too.

1. You do know that Quaritch's mech did have a gun, but Neytiri and her Thanator smashed it in combat, right?

2. You have to remember that the Na'vi are almost twice the size of a regular human, so Quaritch fighting Jake 1 on 1 would have been a terrible idea. If between the two, I'd rather stay in the giant mechanical mech with the multiple-foot length knife where I have the obvious strength and defense advantage. Also, although the knife appears to be moving slowly, it probably has tremendous force behind it so the impact would be several times greater than if Quaritch swung a regular knife himself.

Anyways....

Lost in Translation

It's taken me three or four viewings, but I think I've finally decided that I like this movie.
