Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Perhaps deodorent hasnt been invented yet?

Hot Fuzz

This kicks a$$!!

Think about it - you have the best comdey cast EVER (Simon Pegg, Timothy Dalton, Bill Bailey, that British Guy who's in every movie I've watched yet who's name I always forget.....the list goes on....) a completely stupid and overblown plot, and suprisingly awesome action. Whats not to like? You have every kind of humour in the world. You have slapstick, over-the-top gore, subtle humour, physical humour...even the plot itself is a joke.

My favourite scene (and thats a hard choice) is 'The Battle Of Sommerfield' (a cheap British food shop). How could having an all-out war in a supermarket not be hilariously awesome?

Overall: its beyond a Comedy. To call it a Comdey is an insult to the movie. Its action, mystery and comedy compiled to create pure un-canned,un-tarnished, un-compressed WIN.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Been a while since I posted here, so I figure it's time to bring the quality of this thread up a little.

O Brother, Where Art Thou? (Coen Bros.) - very solid comedy; it has a lot of music that I enjoy as well.

The Man Who Wasn't There (Coen Bros.) - I'm surprised this didn't get more attention; it's quite fabulous.

The Color of Pomegranates (Sergei Parajanov) - definitely one of the most unconventional films I've seen; it's quite good.

Eadweard Muybridge: Zoopraxographer (Thom Andersen) - instantly one of my favorite documentaries; it has this wonderful old Americana feel to it, and is wonderfully put together. Quite mesmerizing, really.

Nanook of the North (Robert Flaherty) - One of the more impressive silent films I've seen, probably because it was filmed out in the open instead of in a studio. It's kind of a portent of things to come cinematically.

Professor Weston's Boxing Cats (Edison Studios) - BOXING CATS!

River of Grass (Kelly Reichardt) - quite a good independent film from the early 90s, filmed on Super 8. Very reminiscent of Terrence Malick's Badlands, but done in a more un-glorified style a la Cassavetes. I was very impressed.

Vampyr (Carl Theodor Dreyer) - Wow, when it comes to early vampire films, this is so much better than Nosferatu. Highly disturbing in a way that really gets under your skin.

The Tale of the Last Chrysanthemum (Kenji Mizoguchi) - Quite an impressive film; the drama is poignant yet very naturally played out in a certain regard.

Manhattan (Woody Allen) - Absolutely wonderful. The writing and acting make the film, and Gordon Willis films it so perfectly. It's kind of hard to believe how good it is.

etc.

A very compelling and powerful story. There was also a Q&A with Dr. Ellsberg and the director at the screening after the movie, so getting to listen to them talk was also pretty cool.

Ooh, I heard about that film. Glad you got to see it; I really want to.

Rainy with a Slight Chance of Beat's Mall (Cloudy with a Chance of Meat Balls GAWSH D:)

HILARIOUS.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Coraline Finally saw this. Insane stop-mo, and a cool mood throughout. Big style switch to...

Days of Heaven, which I had to watch again. It actually seems to improve each viewing, as does...

Primer as well as...

Solaris, which I actually really like. Almost as good as...

Sunshine, which I loved. Great sci-fi. And on my Danny Boyle run I also checked out...

Millions, which was fun and imaginative, a big contrast to...

Poseidon, which seemed rather drab and oddly un-exciting. Along with...

Psycho, which I'm not a big fan of. But then again, I'm not a big Hitchcock fanboy, although I did like...

Vertigo quite a bit more. That night I also watched...

Unbreakable, which I'm strangely attracted to. I like the film a lot, especially the ending, as well as...

AI, which has another odd ending that I like.

Woah, are people having a moviethon or something? mini/eek

Damn this movie freaked me out as a kid, but I watching it again it feels mild in the scary department.
But anyway, I'm pretty sure this is the greatest kid's movie ever made. Also, Robin Williams was great in this.

Was this the 2002 or 1978 version? The old one is definitely worth checking out, though I think it's one of Tarkovsky's weaker films.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

I watched Avatar on Saturday and I have to say, it was pretty incredible, but it seemed just a little like a rip-off of Pocahontas. It portrayed the event of the Europeans coming over to North America very well, in a new, modern, entertaining way.

It was the 2002 version, although I've heard that they're very different films.

I should definitely go on a Tarkovsky run.

The Godfather
Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie, but it wasn't a very good movie.
Wait...
I guess it was just so hyped up that I was expecting more from it. It was good, but not amazing.
For me at least.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

The Wolfman (2010)

Why are you reading this? Go see it
This was an awesome movie, set with the right mood, and IN YOUR FACE wolf action!
I'm not gonna tell much, only that if your a gore and werewolf fanboy, you definatly need to see this one, don't expect to be scared though...
All the actors bring a excellent performence, I really liked Hugo Weaving in this one.
This was a true adaptation from the original, a nice example of a good remake.

4/5 of Samson the dog... coincidence?

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Network (1976)

To be quite frank, I thought the visual style was dull and some of the acting over-the-top and annoying (though apparently the Academy of '76 threw acting awards at the movie like discard-able baseballs). It almost redeemed itself, however, with the phrase 'docksmanship'*. Plus the whole mad-as-hell dealio. And Laureen Hobs. And Robert Duvall. Actually, come to think of it, the main thing that bugged me was probably Faye Dunaway.

*'Dock' wasn't actually part of it.

Man On Wire

Such a touching story, it's hard to believe it actually happened. I loved the filmmaking of this movie, it didn't make me think it a documentary. I so glad it got Best Documentary, it deserved it so much.

Fantastic special effects and a great story line. I like movies that randomly flash-back.
