They Came Back (Foreign film)
Yes, a double-feature. Pretty cool idea for a film, I like the way the french think. It's not at all like any zombie movie I've ever seen, that meaning it's not a horror movie. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to be creeped out and not grossed out.

And; 'Avatar' winning a Golden Globe for Best Film......BULLCRAP! "The future of films" my a$$! Imagine if every film had a dumb plot, unessesary amounts of eye-candy that cannot possibly hide the stupidness and lack of originality, and an enviromental message more subtle than Arnold Schwarzenegger painted purple, stood naked in front of the screen, playing a one-man band whilst singing and dancing to "YMCA", with a billboard the size of the Titanic saying in bright flashing letters visible from space: THIS] IS] A] SUBTLE] ENVIROMENTAL] MESSAGE]
From now on, if I happen to become a multi-million Film Director and my film doesnt get a Golden Globe for Best Film - I'm just gonna turn round and say "Well, these are the people who thought 'Avatar' was the future of films".
I mean....Avatar isnt bad, I've seen far worse. But its overrated, overhyped, and no matter how much 3D effects you throw in....its still dumb. If it was made 15 years ago, it would have sucked.

The last film I saw was Avatar.
Now, I don't care what any of you think about it, but I honestly enjoyed it. Usually, a movie seems worse after a few days go by after seeing it, because you think about it more and more. But in this rare case, it just gets better in my head. No, the CGI isn't what hit me hard. I mean, sure, the CGI was amazing indeed, but it is like I have seen it all before...I don't know why. I have imagined much more complex worlds I suppose, so seeing this didn't have too big of a impact on me. But what struck me into the heart and mind was the story and storytelling style. The acting even. Now, I suppose some or even most of you might think of this as some kind of joke. But I am not joking. The story hasn't been done before, the moral has. Most of the movie was "predictable" (still find it interesting how people know ~exactly~ how things are going to happen...), but the way Cameron did everything had a soul to it, unlike other CGI films.
"AHHHHHH, THE MOVIZ WA ABOUT A ENVROMNTALZ MESSAG!" -Seriously, really? Wow, I wouldn't have known that. Well, I suppose that isn't so bad, I mean, after all, nature is beautiful.
"BUT IT HAZ BEN DON BEFORE!" -Well yes, I would say so...but, urm, what's your point exactly?
"THY OVEAR DO ITZ!" -...not really. Pretty much everything in this film was different. I am not sure when people are going to accept the fact there will always be some kind of "overused" message in film, but hopefully soon. Hoping people will start seeing the big picture, and not the little one.
Of course, all of the above is my humble opinion. I just can't see a better plot line for such a film, for the plot is so powerful. So things are cliche, like the spare-of-the-moment backup armies, or the last second saves, but I already expected that. I mean, if it isn't that, then it is going to be the opposite, which has been done before many times as well. Might as well have it go the happy way in today's world I would think! So people who call this film unoriginal, re-watch it. But keep in mind...it's entertainment, which is the point of watching movies. If deep stories entertain you, then I would say this film would.
Oh, and it looks like the Golden Globes finally made the right picks as far as movies go. I wonder if the Oscars will do the same...instead of making the mistake they did last year.

I personally thought, for Avatar, that a much more complex story would have gotten in the way of everything else. I don't usually say that, but I am now. There are four types of story; Milieu, Idea, Character and Event. Lord of the Rings (the book, not the movie) would be an example of a Milieu story, as JRR Tolkien was concentrating more on the world his events were taking place in, not the events themselves, because that is what he cared about. I really think James Cameron, intentionally or unintentionally, made this a Milieu type story, and actually, now that I think of it, I think it was intentional. Why on earth would he develop a whole language for the Na'Vi, and come up with whatever else he put in that Pandorapedia or whatever it was called, if all he cared about was the story?
Seriously, if you guys only go to the theaters for a good story, and nothing else, you will be disappointed. But if you are willing to take in all aspects of the film, you will enjoy Avatar.
Now Max, you can have your opinion, but I seriously think you're not seeing the big picture.
And I personally thought that Avatar had the best CGI human-like characters ever; completely skipping over Uncanny Valley.

A thoroughly refreshing, original, and enjoyable film, I very much liked it. Almost like an anti-rom com.

I've never actually heard of these kinds of storytelling techniques. I shall make a mental note to look them up in more detail (if I'm going to do a Diploma in Film & TV production, I'd better start studying).
The thing I dont like about the story are two things - its 90% unispired (though the concept of 'Avatars' is ok, but surely there are long peorods of time where his Avatar is lifeless, as you see him in his human form during daylight all the time) and for the reason you have mentioned.
You see, I'm a CG Nazi. Movies where the story is based around a CG enviroment I will instantly hate - no matter how much I initially enjoy it. I did enjoy watching Avatar, but I found myself predicting the story beforehand - and being dissapointingly right. Its not a good sign when I'm nitpicking I'm watching, and is really distracting from the overall experience. Its like I actually enjoyed 'Star Wars - The Clone Wars' (I can't beleive I just said that) but when I got home and thought about it, I realised how pointless and un-Star Wars it was.
I marvelled at seeing the classic Star Wars Trilogy, and then watching the special features and seeing how they used models to make the movies. That was genius, and still is in my opinion. For me - movie making is vast locations, large studios with amazing sets that you can touch, and exotic landscapes that are actually real landscapes. Thats movies in my opinion. Thats why I love Lord Of The Rings. Sure it has CG, but its not overused at all, and is only used where there is physically no other way.
Movie Making is not a tiny room the size of my bedroom with just a Greenscreen and an actor, and then a bunch of guys sitting on computers. Anyone can create an image on a computer. Its not Genuis. Everyone does it. I didnt think Avatar was groundbreaking at all - I just thought longer was spent on computers getting it right. So?
This brings me back to the point you made about basing it around a CG enviroment. I think its irrelevant.
'Lord Of The Rings' was a book - later adapted into a film. The focus of the book was based around a vast enviroment with a complex backstory that had three books/movies to flesh out and explain. 'Avatar' is a single film based on a bunch of Disneys more forgetable movies - and they were forgetable for a reason. Is there a better Comparison?
And if 'Pandora' was the main focus of the movie - I didnt think he did a very good job. I never really was interested in the world of Pandora - partly due to the lack of backstory as to where is Pandora. I know pretty images were the foucus intead of story, but Pandora never seemed to be 'real' enough for me to become ingrossed in. I have no idea why, but I was never really cared.
And anyone can come up with a load of nonsense words and call it "Navi Language"...

I actually haven't seen the movie and i am sure it's very enjoyable I just know the plot and what happens.
I'm sure I'll like the movie but I thought max's joke was funny too.

Sherlock Holmes
If the dialogue had made sense, and if the characters were introduced properly, it might not have taken so long to become interesting. I found myself bored throughout the whole thing, up to near the ending when it started to make sense. I still have no idea who that chick was though... Just some random love interest that they didn't even bother to introduce? mini/confused To me, the movie felt like a sequel. It was as if they expected you to already know who all of the characters were, so they didn't bother to introduce them, or develop them. The action scenes were decent, and overall it was somewhat interesting.

As for the whole Sherlock Holmes Vs. Avatar thing, Avatar wins. At least Avatar filled me with awe. All Sherlock Holmes did was make me sleepy. I am already beginning to forget everything about it, as my mind usually "deletes" uninteresting movies.

This movie felt like it was going to be a happy fun-filled family film, but it was definitely NOT one on all levels.
At points it was absolutely hilarious, but I was only laughing at how outrageous it was. I usually love Terry Gilliam's stuff, but this isn't a movie I'd recommend anyone seeing. Pretty wacky.

Definatly a Coen's film
It's freaking hilarius, although not as funny as The Big Lebowski.
I might see "A Serious Man" in theatre-Darkman
A Serious Man blows Burn After Reading out of the water. Then again, it's more in the tradition of stuff like Barton Fink, so I'm not sure what you'll make of it. I personally loved it.

Had to watch it at work... It's not good. A lot of it doesn't make sense, and French Stewart has a very... repetitive facial expression?

My parents seemed interested to see it, so I'll probably see it. First I'll watch No Country For Old Men.
