Well, you could do it with LEGO while shooting. When I shot a gun scene for a project, I decided not to add muzzle flashes in post-production, but just do it in-camera. That means, I used this piece which I put on the gun in some frames. I prefer this more puristic solution because it seems more authentic to me.
