Look here. There are a lot of good explosions and gun effects, not to mention fire, blood, and weather. This site probably has what you need.
No, actually 90% of the effects are free, just look! We use hundreds of them, and they are all free! Some you need to pay for, but just ignore those.
Just download them onto your desktop, then either chroma or luma key them into your film, resizing them if necessary. (And hey, if you can't do it yourself, we can do it for you!

Yes. He wants a muzzle flash.
Well, you could do it with LEGO while shooting. When I shot a gun scene for a project, I decided not to add muzzle flashes in post-production, but just do it in-camera. That means, I used this piece which I put on the gun in some frames. I prefer this more puristic solution because it seems more authentic to me.
