i don't have monkey jam or helium frog because i've heard that they capture from a webcam. is there some kind of import function so that i can import pictures from my camera?
oh, and one more thing. i have no idea what onion skinning is, can someone please enlighten me?

You can import frames into both programs. The only real difference is that you can only import JPEG frames into HeliumFrog, and they don't get added to the current animation project.
Onion-skinning is basically having a ghost image over the live feed, showing the last frame while you take the next.
