Adobe After Effects CS5 is crazy expensive, so is there a way to purchase an older version legally, for a cheaper price?

Otherwise if you're a student, you could be entitled to a student discount.
I got AE 5.0 on, like Sean said, Ebay, for about $30.
Student discount sites are good, but the price is still pretty high.
Get The partical Illusion I Think its way better with effects and works with AE!

Go get the student edition if you can, I did and it and its pretty good value for money.
