Well, always put yourself into the role, (sometimes standing up helps) make sure that instead of acting as "Thug#1" for example, BE "Thug#1".
If you need to be angry in the role, get angry! Remember something that make you angry, and put it into the voice.
If you can learn to do that, then you will have a massive boost in your acting quality.
