Hi. I am thinking of buying a Canon 550D for making home movies as I am quite interested in the effects that can be achieved through the wide range of lenses available. The depth of filed on the 50mm 1.8 is very impressive! ..Has anyone had any first hand experience?

Yes, I've used one of these quite a bit. The sharpness of the HD video leaves something to be desired at times, but for the price it's nothing short of fantastic. Being able to use lenses is absolutely the biggest plus. You can achieve some very "cinematic" shots with little trouble at all. I'd say that this or one of the other Canon video DSLRs is probably the best choice for HD video recording short of a Red camera.
I have a 550D myself however I cannot currently afford any more lenses than the stock one that comes with it. That said, even the stock lens produces some great looking footage. The 550D is pretty much the best value for money DSLR at the moment and if you can afford decent lenses on top of that, that's awesome. Go for it.
If you can, go the extra buck, by the 7D. Better HD than the 5D.
The 7D is technically a better camera and if you have that much moolah lying around then go for it. The 550D however does give comparable quality in most areas and unless you're a crazy dedicated full time cinematographer/photographer I think the 7D might be wasted. The 550D remains to be better value for money.
The true image maker remains to be the lens. A crap lens on a 7D = crap image. A great lens on a 550D = great image. It's not always about the biggest and the best.. it's about value for money.
As far as I'm aware the only additional features the 7D has over the 550D are for still image capture. Both cameras have the same sensor, and having used both of them I can say that the images are basically indistinguishable. The 550D does use an SD card rather than a Compact Flash card as the 7D uses, but this only amounts to a slight difference in the write speed.
I've actually been very interested lately in picking one up for stop-motion (and possibly live-action) as well, so it's good to see a lot of you endorsing it.
However, I'm sort of ignorant as far as lenses and stuff go. I know that Dragon Stop Motion recommends using Nikon lenses with Canon EOSs to avoid the risk of light flicker with Canon lenses. But I wouldn't know where to begin with that, so would any of you have any recommendations for lenses to go with a 550D for stop-mo (particularly from EOS users here)? I would think that some sort of macro lens would be best, but like I said, I'm pretty ignorant about this.

Mobile uses a 7D with nikon lenses and macro filters for his Lego stop motion. The 550D is a solid replacement for those who don't have thousands of dollars to throw around. He uses I believe a 28mm and a 55mm manual Nikon lens with an adapter allowing them to fit on his Canon body. He has stressed to me previously how important the macro filters are for Lego work.

I used one on a compact, but the lens adapter stuck out too much making it useless.
