Topic: Alright, so I need some advice...

Here's how I currently animate...

I shoot the shot on a Lumix digital camera. I take camera to my desktop PC, download the frames and animate them by importing them into Premiere Pro, compiling them and exporting. Then I use that video file on the timeline for the whole scene.

I use the Lumix rather than a webcam because the macro setting is brilliant, and the short depth of field is really effective for creating a filmic look, and I use Premiere because it gives me full editing control of the shots.

As you have probably gathered, this is hugely time consuming and inefficient and what I would rather do is this...

Using the Lumix like a webcam, connect it directly to a laptop and as I shoot and have it automatically compile the frames and give me a real time preview (with the above method, I can only see the shot once I've finished and rendered the shot in Premiere). Then, when the shot is finished, I would like to export it and use it in Premiere where I will compile my sound effects and deal with colour correction etc.

Is there a piece of software (preferably free) that will allow me to do this? I realise there is a lot of software for doing this with a webcam, but is it possible to do this with my regular digital camera?

Re: Alright, so I need some advice...

SSS, this is very similar to how I animate. And yes, I too use a Panasonic Lumix. I will be downloading iStopMotion 2 (the free demo) to see which one I'm going to get, so when I do, I'll PM you let you know how it works for me. It can be really annoying to work on a scene for a while, and then find out that its really shaky, so I am also trying to find a way to use my Lumix like a Webcam (and take the stills via computer). You may try Frame by Frame if you have a Mac, but I couldn't get it to work with my Lumix. I PM'd ZP about this, so we'll see what we can find out... mini/shifty

Alright! mini/bigsmile
Dragon Stop Motion can suport the Lumix through HDMI, but it's not even close to free.
Other then that, I don't realy know much about it.
Hope I helped!

Re: Alright, so I need some advice...

I tried out iStopMotion 2... the Lumix is not supported to capture images, only to import them (this is true for nearly every camera except a few Olympus, Nikon, Kodak, and Canon models.) However, this is only with a USB connection. I'm going to see if any of my friends have a HDMI connection that they could let me borrow to test it out. Grrrr. Stupid non-compatability. mini/troll
