Topic: How to Fail Horribly; For Dummies.

Okay, so as some of the older members here know, I really haven't been successful with any of my films, as in, I haven't finished them... I always lose focus. I really love brick-filming and I WANT to make a film, but, truly I have no patience to do a full film. I mean, if I was really patient, and inspired, I know I could make a good one. Thing is, I don't have patience, time, nor can I find a film that is a good balance of entertainment and simplicity. This is where I'm asking for your guys' help. I'd like to know how you guys find the time, inspiration, and patience to brick-filming.

QUESTIONS:

What is something I could do while brick-filming to keep me entertained?

I have stuff usually every weekday from 8am - 6pm, so, the only chance I have is the weekends and after 6pm.
How long should I brick-film at a time?

How can I make effective sets, but still keep them simple?

How long should my first film be?

And, last, how do you guys get inspiration?

Thanks if any of you answer these questions. I took a hiatus from brick filming the last 6 months or so, and i want to get back into it (lol, I said that 2 months ago), but I mean it this time. ALSO! How are the forums going? Is trolling still going on?

Lots of love,
                 -MoL <3

Persist.

Watch other brickfilms while brickfilming. Also, music.

I usually make it a goal to complete a minimum of 5 seconds of animation each session. That doesn't imply I've finished everything I've started.

It's all about perspective, and creativity. Watch this, and this.

How long should my first film be?

My first film was about 90 seconds, and my first into the directory was about 8 seconds. It doesn't really matter.

And, last, how do you guys get inspiration?

For me, it's usually lack of sleep. But there are many ways. Look around you. Take a trip into your nearest town or city, and watch what happens. Sometimes you'll be struck with a brilliant idea. Hazzat says he got the inspiration for Greed while watching Grace.

I usually do the same as mcoov, watch other brickfilms or listen to music.

I don't to how much animation, I do it by time. I'd advise anywhere from 1-2 hours, depending on how much you want done, how fast you can animate, and how soon you want the film out.

Add little details to your sets to make them really stand out from just being a plain, boring wall or something.

How long should my first film be?

As mcoov said, it's entirely up to you, but I'd probably make something in the 1-2 minute zone.

And, last, how do you guys get inspiration?

Watch some really awesome brickfilms right before you start animating. Also, I find that if I storyboard a film, I stick with it a lot better than I usually do. But when it really comes down to it, I get inspired by saying "Alright, I haven't made a brickfilm in a while, I'm going to drag myself from whatever I'm doing and make one." Sometimes you really don't feel like brickfilming, but once you initially push yourself off of the computer chair or wherever you are, you get a lot more in the mood for it.

If you leave a small piece of your mind open to ideas all the time, then something will hit you. I've had lots of ideas formed at random times, but make sure you write the ideas down. I got the inspiration to make Viva La Vida when listening to Lady Gaga's Paparazzi.

Re: How to Fail Horribly; For Dummies.

It helps me if I can find one person to work with, most of my films were made with a friend, we both animated, he did music, I did digital effects. Even if they are just there to help you build sets you can bounce ideas off them, sometimes chatting with other people helps.

I would try to write a script, and if possible keep those early scripts to one page. Keeping films short will make it easer to finish. I started one very large project and never finished it, I still have about 52 seconds of great looking animation from it, but I don't think it will ever get finished.

i animate at the night-time usually when I get really hyped with a good idea or get a determination inside of me. You don't have to if you don't want to but sometimes I just force myself to animate and then I get into it. Talking to a fellow animator on Skype helps to past the time as well. mini/smile

C910 is awesome. Gonna try to post an animation EVERY WEEK! SUNDAY or MONDAY!

We get inspired by curiosity, we usually watch Picturesque, Unrenewable, Grace, Frankenstein, Driven or The River, and we ask the question, "How do they do that?" And then we start animating.
