I've been trying to change my avatars, but no matter how I try to reduce file size, its always too big. I use photoshop and use every possible size reduction that I know, yet it's always like 18kb. I even tied 10x10 pixels, and even then it was too big!
Got any programs or ideas to reduce file size?
Ok, well, I use GIMP and they are sort of similar. I crop it and then hit save. when I click save a little box comes up with the quality size that you want it to be. I go through that until I see something that is very close to 10KB or right on it. I then check the quality and it's usually Ok. Then I just use that as my avatar. If that doesn't work, you could try making a cool avatar like RealBrick has. Hope this helps!

Some images compress better as different file types, PNG, GIF, and JPEG should all be valid avatar types. PNG is a lossless image type so you may be better off saving as a JPEG which should give a quality setting with options from 0 to 12, something around 7 should work nicely.

Okay. By the way, how do you change the label under your avatar. For example, instead of "MEMBER" under Hazzat there is "SUIT OF RETRIBUTION" I thought you had to be a mod.

I allways have problems changing my avatar, PNG's just never seem to work, even when they are well under 10kb. I just use JPG now, that usually works fine.
I dunno what the issues are exactly. I use photoshop elements "export for web" feature so my avatars always end up well under 10 kb. I believe I usually use .png format.

I should know this, I built at least one image uploader for this site.
No hard feelings, the forum software originally had .gif compatibility but I personally edited the code to disable it. 'Cuz animated avatars are annoying.
Doesn't Bertl have an animated avatar? I swear sometimes I see that purple darken a little bit, then go back to normal, repeatedly...
EDIT: Yes yes BertL does! I tried saving his avatar, and its an adobe fireworks gif image.
GIFs used to be allowed, and the people who had them back then got to keep them when they were banned (except SmallTimeProductions).
I still think GIFs should be allowed, but must go through a submission and approval process first.
That'd be sorta silly to have a system that complex for avatars
the animation on Bertl's is barely noticeable, otherwise I'd just as soon avoid any avatars that draw extra attention to themselves.
Just wanted to point out that AncientBricks has a gif as an avatar (and it is not something that is easily missed). We're not complaining, just pointing something out.

Okay, new problem! I figured out how to get it below size, but now instead of showing any error message, when I say Update Profile, it still shows my old avatar! I tried deleting it, and deleting it from my computer, too, but it still doesn't show my new avatar....

Just empty your cache and it will be updated. I can see your new avatar.
