Topic: Soap on Lego?

For some reason, one of my boxes of lego has an odd and wretched odor. I was wondering if it would be okay to wash the box and lego with dish soap and water. Any thoughts?

Re: Soap on Lego?

Completely fine. Unless you sharpie'd some bricks to give a design, that will probably weaken/come off.

Thanks.

Re: Soap on Lego?

Don't scrub too hard or the pre-printed decals will rub off.

Re: Soap on Lego?

For cleaning LEGO, I get ice cream pails, put LEGO in them, and drizzle it with dish soap (I use Dawn) add water, and swish it around for a few minutes. Let that sit overnight (or longer).

When it comes time to get the water out, I place a strainer over a sink and gently pour the water out of the pail (the strainer is for not letting the LEGO slip down the drain). I then dump the LEGO out on a towel and have a fan blow on for a few hours or overnight if necessary.

I have never actually cleaned my Lego.

Me neither.

Re: Soap on Lego?

When a bunch of Lego was donated to are school, my mom had to clean them. She soaked them in bleach, and let them dry.  don't know if that would get rid of the smell, though.

Re: Soap on Lego?

I washed some Lego once and they were a pain to dry. I tried this with 20 bricks or so, if your cleaning 200+ your gonna have some trouble. Also try not to use soap because if you dont dry them properly it could leave a mark.

Re: Soap on Lego?

I just washed all of the LEGO I got in a bricklink order. They smelled like a musky old basement, so I dumped them all into a sink with warm water and soap! I swished it around, fished them out, and used a hairdryer to dry them. Be careful with the hair dryer, I melted a small brick on accident. mini/XD

I do not care about your opinion, unless it has to do with it needing more ponies.

Re: Soap on Lego?

WAIT!!!

I remember reading somewhere that there's a scratch resistance film on LEGO bricks that's added after they're made at the factory, putting them in water will dissolve this film, and therefore making them more prone to scratches.

So, I'd never put a printed brick in water, or even a normal one if I could help it...

Re: Soap on Lego?

Just washed a baseplate and a ninja minifig after using tomato sauce as blood (which worked surprisingly well, actually).
The ninja seemed OK apart from occasionally burping bubbles because of the soapy water he swallowed. He's totally fine now, though.

Re: Soap on Lego?

I washed a paint drops that were older than me in a baseplate with a wet cloth, also washed my lego pieces.

What's the point of making brick models if your little brother destroys them?
