Re: Books!

Read White Fang recently for school.

It was quite good, Jack London was a master at descriptive writing...I quite liked it. Interesting concept to write mostly from the point of view of a wolf.

8/10

Into the darkness once more. I walk into the unknown. To a far better life than I've ever known.

Re: Books!

I read Call of the Wild, it's a grittier version of White Fang.

Re: Books!

Not really. They're companions, to be sure, but the dramatic journeys are completely reversed. In The Call of the Wild, an abducted, domesticated animal heeds said call and becomes a wild animal, returning to his home, whereas in White Fang, the wild animal journeys toward domestication.

Re: Books!

I recently finished Life of Pi by Yann Martel
Good book though it does require some religious background information in advance.
Very nice first person descriptive writing

But you have to admit, Call of the Wild is a whole lot more grim.

Re: Books!

That's an inherent part of a progression towards wildness. I was taking issue, rather, with your calling The Call of the Wild simply another version of White Fang.

Re: Books!

I'm almost done with The lost hero, by Rick Riordan.

So far it's pretty good, but still a lot like the other ones.

Re: Books!

^ The woman looks like Tomb Raider.

Anyways, I recently read 'God Hates Us All' (finally). I liked it, it had its moments.
I've also read half of Lolita but I stopped. It was written greatly, but I thought the characters were boring. And I didn't enjoy the fact that the story was being told by a pedophile...
I read also: Choke by Chuck Palahniuk. Too bad I saw the movie first because it's almost the exact same, so I didn't find it that good.
Vissen Redden - Annelies Verbeke: Liked alot as well, favourite Flemish writer.
And parts of "How the human mind works" by Steven Pinker, which is very interesting.
Right now I'm reading 'Hollywood' by Charles Bukowski.

Re: Books!

I started Reading 'The Giver'. I learn in school that some towns ban this book.

Re: Books!

I'm reading the Scott Pilgrim series for the sixth time now.

Re: Books!

Recently read Inherit the Wind, which is an amazing play, really, read it, it brings up good issues.  I also recently read To kill a Mockingbird, which as a great book about racism.  Now I'm on to the four original Sherlock Holmes novels by William Doyle.

Re: Books!

Last book I read was The Good Earth.
Really fantastic book. The writing style fits the mood of the novel very well. The tragedy through the entire thing was handled superbly, and while I wasn't entirely certain how Buck could bring the book to a satisfying conclusion, she caught me by surprise and essentially tied the whole thing up with one brilliant sentence. Social ideas are implemented throughout the novel in a way that well reflects the turbulence of pre-WWII Chinese life. I would definitely recommend it. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a dull book because of the subject matter, it truly isn't.

Re: Books!
