Topic: Good terrain in blender.

Well guys. Its me again with another question about blender. Terrain is something that is bugging me a lot. Doing the regular plain mesh, then using the sculpting tools to make it shaped  and proceeding to do nothing else makes it look bland.
Does anyone know how to create a much better more realistic terrain in blender?. I.E. how to make it look more like sand/rock or whatever or how to make it look like lego (building it in leocad and importing would take forever and lag my comp to bits on large terrain sequences).
So, any help is appreciated.

Save images of terrain on google images, and put the on the plane, or surface.
