Topic: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/hew … 2c7230en02

I'm looking into a new computer, as my current one is rather old and has trouble with editing, rendering, being fast etc.
Windows 7 seems to be a good option, now I just need to find an actual computer. Do any of you have suggestions? Something cheap (under 900$) and has good memory, and performs well.

Thanks in advance.

Yeah, but he wants a new computer, not a new OS.

Being the Mac fanboy that I am, I'd suggest getting a Mac and putting Windows 7 on it, but it looks like that would be too expensive, it seems. So, I went on the Dell website, went through some stuff, placed emphasis on viewing and creating videos, movies, etc, and playing games, and this came up. It costs about $700-800.

I meant upgrade the hardware.

Re: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

I think it'd probably be better if you built your own (it's much cheaper) but if you'd rather not, I'd would recommend buying this one. It's $100 over your price range but it comes with a $50 Dell gift card, and you could also sell the monitor that comes with it for quite a bit too if you just use your old one. IMO it's the best bang for your buck.

Re: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

I wouldn't go for that. Tom's Hardware has this kind of stuff.  It gives you the performance ratings.  I think this would be a good setup:

LGA1156 Motherboard (I recommend the P7P55D-E, it has USB 3.0 and 6GB/s ports!)

Quad/Two 4850's

i5 750 (OC's to 3.8GHz with standard cooler.)

4GB of 1666MHz of RAM. (Mine have coolers on the top.)

750W modular PSU.

750GB 7200RPM Hard drive.

AND IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY! 80GB SSD.

All info on building your own computer can be found here. The trouble with Dell is that it's a rip off! The RAM they give you is not very fast.

I would stick with windows Xp, new windows OS uses up more processing power which would so much more useful to process your films with. It would be cheaper as well.

But it has no support, and it isn't 100% compatible with everything.

oh well, the important thing is getting the most for your money. Windows 7 has some fancy stuff but its no good for making films

Re: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

I'm not interested in making my own computer, I understand tht it would cost less, but I'd rather buy a computer. Was the computer I posted good enough for filmmaking? Are there parts of it that aren't good enough?
Thanks for the help.

Re: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

If all you want to do is make films and surf the web than that computer is much to good. you could get a cheaper one with lower specifications. However with this computer you would be looking at the ability to play high end games, do CGI, and it would be bloody fast. there is plenty of HDD space. The graphics card is HD with an HDMI output meaning you could plug it into a HDTV. But it doesn't come with an HDMI cable.
Personally I would buy it.

...but I wouldn't

Get this:

LGA1156 Motherboard (I recommend the P7P55D-E, it has USB 3.0 and 6GB/s ports!)

Quad/Two 4850's

i5 750 (OC's to 3.8GHz with standard cooler.)

4GB of 1600MHz of RAM. (Mine have coolers on the top.)

750W modular PSU.

1000GB 7200RPM Hard drive.

And use a company that builds it for you. Or there is this. A bit over-budget but well worth it.

Re: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

What graphics would be good enough? Would lower graphics memory affect the overall performance much?

Re: Looking for a computer (Windows 7)

Do you really need all this smanchy fancy stuff? I mean your past computer worked fine for an amount of time right? Then you should just get the one you were looking at, it seems good enough. (Thats an understatement) mini/tongue
