Does anyone know a good Blender lighting tutorial? I can't seem to get some of my CGI renders to turn out how I would like them to.
I finally finished the animation I posted about earlier. Hope you like it
The Video (720p available)
And some stills:

That is AWESOME! It hardly even looks CG! ![]()
The lighting is really lifelike yeah
well done.
Video description: 3DS MAX and rendered with V ray.
Thanks guys
@ZP - it took over 100 hours, probably around 150 for everything. But that was using a single q6600 and even most of the time using only 3 of its cores for rendering and using the fourth to work on other things ![]()
@Aquamorph - some parts were imported from LeoCAD, but most of them were remodeled in max to look better from up close and everything was assembled in max. Minifigs were modeled and rigged in max as well. The ones in the intro are new high poly versions, they look a bit better and have a better rig. I made them only after rendering the main animation.. Oh well...

3DS max is a modelling software too you know.... and thats what he used.
This is a CGI LEGO scene I've been working on for a long time now, all done in 3ds Max, rendered with V-Ray.

Yeah but a lot of times with 3D LEGO animation people use other programs like LeoCAD.
Yeah, I edited my last post to answer your question, don't know if you saw it now.
Some parts are indeed imported from LeoCAD. In the video description I mentioned parts from LDraw library, which is what LeoCAD uses AFAIK.

Ok thanks you did a great job remodeling them because LeoCAD parts look ugly when imported into 3ds Max.
hey, Rsteenoven, would matchmover work with 3ds max? or is it just for maya?
Edit: also, i'm wondering which would be better to focus on, maya or 3ds max.
and one last thing, could someone give me a link to where i can get matchmover through the education program? thanks

Wow... that's incredible quality! rendering that behemoth must have taken a LOT of patience haha
Excellent work, at first glance I thought someone had posted their scene pictures in the wrong thread ![]()
Students Autodesk: http://students.autodesk.com/ (you have to be a student)
Maya and 3ds max are pretty similar, in the industry they are both commonly used. And yes matchmover will work with 3ds max.

i signed up for that student autodesk site, but i don't get it. They just give away free programs to anyone?! when i ordered my adobe stuff with a student discount i needed all sorts of documents and proof that i went to school. there must be a catch...
They give out student licences to STUDENTS so that they can learn to use the software.... to download it you need to have like a valid student email address etc.
You must be a student:
A student is an individual enrolled at a recognized degree-granting or certificate-granting educational institution for three (3) or more credit hours in a degree-granting or certificate granting education program or in a nine (9) month or longer certificate program, and upon request by Autodesk is able to provide proof of such enrollment.
