Topic: Set Building Tutorial?

Well I'm not here to pose the question I'm sure your all assuming by reading this thread. "Where can I learn to build sets?", but more to ask if anyone would be interested in my own thoughts of how to build sets. I'm sure this will sound humbling ( mini/tongue ), but I've got a pretty fair idea that I can build sets fine. Here's the humbling line... in fact I think I can build sets as one of the "better" builders throughout all of us filmers. I'm not trying to sound "super cool" or whatever I'm just trying to state a pre-thing of whats to come...

Anyway I think its about time I get the point of this post. (Or at least try...) I know StevieCollins started some of his building tutorials and I'm sure they helped loads of people along with NathanWells and his two or three general tutorials on getting started. They were both great, but I felt the Stevie's were more like instructions (still very good for props and everything else needed in a film) while Nathan's was very general helping others to (along with the rest of his tutorials) get started. I was hoping to find something along the lines of a mid-range between this while describing specific aspects of set building that I try to follow when building some of my sets while also staying general enough that any viewers could play around with it and integrate it into a film of their very own.

I was thinking the films would probably be fairly short at about 3-5 minutes while still describing what was needed, although not going to specific. Some of the ideas I had in mind for making into short tutorials included:
~Wall Elements - Filling the Empty Space
~Landscaping - From Mountains to Sand (Also a bit with transition)
~Applying Foliage
~Using the Lesser Known Props - Realism
~Color Palette - Use it Smart!
Along with a couple others I've been brain storming about. I thought in this post I would just get a general idea to see if anyone was interested in a tutorial series that would really elaborate in set design. If the response is good I'll try to get a Intro type thing up soon. Probably to my Youtube channel linked somewhere in this thread. If not, then...
Anyway I'd love to know your thoughts on this idea of mine (among a few others, one being the lost IMBD, but that's a new thread...later.) You can see examples of my building at Flickr.

Again any feedback perfectly welcomed here.

Re: Set Building Tutorial?

This tutorial would go into building sets. Such as foliage in a set.

Thanks for the feedback as well.

Re: Set Building Tutorial?

That's a really good idea, I don't have many good bricks for building sets (my basic bricks, despite the fact that I have about 1500 of them aren't very good because they're all multicoloured) so hope fully this should help. Also, could you do a bit on building vehicles please? And I could try to contribute on the mechanisms bit if you do one, though having watched you're youtube videos, I doubt you'd need any help.

I'm back. Possibly.

Re: Set Building Tutorial?

I'm sure I could do a little something on vehicles. I'll also work on colors with limited bricks. Thanks for the suggestions I'll see if I can take a break from studying for finals to record a video.

My Youtube Channel has a few MOCs on it set to slide show format. I thought I'd throw it in since you mentioned it dhh.
