Topic: People can't delete their own thread with no replies

The forum is configured to allow any user to delete a thread the same user started - no matter how many replies it has.  This is handy for deleting accidental duplicates and such, but it also has allowed Aled Owen and History500 to 'rewrite history,' as richardfrost put it, silencing a discussion when it doesn't go the way they want it to go.  Could this be changed to prevent users from deleting their own threads after someone has replied?  That's how it is on most forums and I think that makes sense.

I never really liked it either. I think that power should be left for the mods only, except maybe normal posts.

Re: People can't delete their own thread with no replies

I like to be able to delete a topic if it goes horribly wrong, such as getting into a huge argument about religion or something. But I see what you mean.

Hey, I deleted that thread, because the hottest actress thread was already locked, and it was a hateful thread, on both sides. I would like to have the right to delete my posts and threads.

Re: People can't delete their own thread with no replies

I can understand being able to delete a thread if nobody has replied, but what if the original poster of a thread with fifty pages worth of replies accidentally lets someone else use their account?

I'd be happier without that option available.

I think we should all be able to delete our own posts as long as nobody has replied to them.  But letting you delete a thread you started isn't just letting you delete your own posts - it lets you delete other peoples' posts as well, something that should be reserved for moderators.  Some people participating in your thread were not mindlessly hating on you and had put some thought and care into their responses, so it's a slap in the face to these people to just delete the entire thread when it doesn't turn out how you'd hoped it would turn out.  I can't complain too much about that incident though because the current forum setup doesn't prevent you from doing it, so it was at least within your rights.  If a thread gets out of hand, moderators should be there to either moderate it heavily or lock it, so I don't see the need to, in effect, give some moderating privileges to every user.  Neo's thought about the added risk factor is a good point as well.

I agree with Smeagol.

I agree with Simon who agrees with Smeagol. You shouldn't be able to 'rewrite history' as it was put.

When it gets to a certain amount of pages/posts, you shouldn't be able to delete it.

or, you can ask a mod to, and if it needs to, it can be.

Great, thank you Schlaeps.

...Any chance we could get a "General" forum in the "Films" division of the forums?  As the forum has grown the need has become increasingly evident, there are so many film and brickfilming threads in "Bricks" and "Coffee Shop" that don't fit in those forums, but also wouldn't fit anywhere else.

And a Contest Discussion forum, so that other aforementioned forums don't get clogged with contest ideas.

I know that Schleaps has already has updated this but people need to be able to delete their own threads. I accedentily created a thread and wanted to delete it but couldn't so now we have one more locked thread in the community forum. mini/sad

Changed my siggy.

Re: People can't delete their own thread with no replies

How about this: anyone can "throw away" a thread. It gets chucked to the bottom, so the discussion is disregarded, yet always there.

Can you delete it if nobody has replied?  Because as a mod I can delete anything anyway, so I'm unable to check this, but IMO anybody should be allowed to delete their own thread that has no replies.  If that's not how it's set up, it'd be good if Schlaeps could change that.

In fact, ideally I'd suggest allowing people to delete threads with only one reply as well, if that's possible.  There are a few folks here who are liable to post a reply saying something to the effect that "this is a stupid thread" with in a minute of the original post.

On the whole though I think these problems are an exception to the general trend, it's better to disable thread deletion than let anybody delete their own thread regardless of how many posts are in it.
