Topic: Who are your favorite directors?

This can be a really interesting thread, but it would be best if you take the time to write a bit explaining why you like certain directors.

Terrence Malick (Days of Heaven, The New World)

His films are extremely philosophical, and have a unique, naturalistic style that I love. They can be quite hard to appreciate at first viewing, but they're unlike anything else.

Joel & Ethan Coen (Fargo, Miller's Crossing, Raising Arizona, No Country For Old Men)

They can be hit-and-miss at times, though I love their incredibly dark humor and style. They also cast Steve Buscemi a lot, which is fantastic.

Werner Herzog (Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Grizzly Man)

I've gotten really interested in his style, which is straightforward and and very honest in a way.

Todd Haynes (I'm Not There, Far From Heaven)

His visual inventiveness is pretty amazing, as is his use of music. I should check out his earlier stuff.

Jim Jarmusch (Dead Man, Coffee and Cigarettes, Night on Earth)

Another fantastic independent filmmaker. I particularly enjoy the vignette style he uses in a couple of his films.

Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather, Apocalypse Now)

I've heard some bad stuff about his later films, but his storytelling skill in the two films above is indisputable IMO.

There are a few others I know of, but I can't really pass judgement on them yet, as I've only seen one of their films: Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Kelly Reichardt (Old Joy), etc.

Andrew Stanton
After WALL-E and Finding Nemo (which I got sick of after a while, but is still a great film), I've decided that I will try to see any his films, though if he only does Pixar films I'll be going to see them anyway.

Tim Burton
A very weird director, but I thought Corpse Bride was a great film, even if it was a bit disturbing.

Peter Jackson
I clearly remember when Return of the King came out; I went to see it with my dad and several of my siblings. The theater was packed. After The Ring was dropped into Mount Doom, Frodo and Sam ran out of the mountain, and the film faded to black, everyone got up and cheered. That is the only film I have ever seen where that happened. Now, when I watch the film, I still feel like cheering at that scene. It's such a great movie.

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

James Cameron (Titanic)

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Night Owl, you should watch Magnolia.

Steven Spielberg - I know some people have criticized his films for being overly sentimental at times, but this is probably the aspect I most like about much of his work. Of the 2/3 of his films I've seen, I don't think I disliked a single one. Minority Report is my favorite film of his.

Alfred Hitchcock - The singularity of his films is amazing, though I haven't begun to scratch the surface of watching the 50+ films he made.

Peter Jackson - His use of visual effects is amazing. At times it's not always realistic, but never lacking in audacity and scope. The LOTR trilogy was fantastic, though I like King Kong much better.

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Stanley Kubrick, Werner Herzog, and Martin de Thurah are awesome directors. I don't like George Lucas that much. I like the Coen Brothers' dry humor.

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, City of Lost Children, Amelie)

Not only are his movies very imaginative and just crazy, he has interesting characters with quirky characters whom you are enthralled by throughout the movie. Except for Alien: Resurrection. That movie sucked.

Hayao Miyazaki (Laputa, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbour Totoro, Spirited Away)

Every time I watch his films, I am entranced. It is like I am ten years old and caught by wonder and awe.

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

In no particular order...

Krzysztof Kieslowski
Coen Brothers
James Mangold
Werner Herzog
Terrence Malick
Martin Scorsese
Ingmar Bergman
Akira Kurosawa
Michael Curtiz
Michel Gondry
Spike Jonze
George Lucas (Love/hate)
Alfred Hitchcock
Tim Burton
David Fincher (More recently)

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Christopher Nolan (Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight)

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Tim Burton: There are no words for his awesomeness, his films Batman, Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow. were really good and stays a remeroble filmmaker for me.

Quentin Tarentino: He has made one of the best films ever made, I don't love him just more as a director, but as a writter to.
I love how he writes a scene with music.

David Fincher: his 2 trillers se7en and Zodiac were just masterpieces that keept to the edge of my seat.

Chirstopher Nolan: He seems like a director who can't fail, he has made some brilliant film these last years although his TDK was kinda disapointing.

The Coen Brothers: 1 word: The Big Lebowski

Alfred Hitchcock: Master of suspense. When I saw rear Windon where in the end the killer steps up the staires and all it just freaked me out, it was just brilliant. and don't forget Psycho mini/bigsmile

Stanley Kubrick: After I watched 2001 I just fell in love with his style. I watched the first half hour of a clockwerk orange and it just blew my away, I couldn't finish watching it because the video had some video/audio trouble.

hopefully I can snatch that DVD somewere soon mini/tongue

PS: Yes Night Owl should see Magnolia

I forgot to mention Kubrick. He strikes me as being very versatile.

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Sean Ellis

Made Cashback, which is a good film.

Re: Who are your favorite directors?

Steven Spielberg did an awesome job in ''The Terminal'' (with Tom Hanks).

Oh and did you know that George Lucas filmed some stuff in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom? Like the bridge seen?

Yes. He also wrote all the Indy films and came up with the idea for them. Spielberg just directed it.

Agree. Totally.

I'd also like to add Isao Takahata. I absolutely loved "Only Yesterday".

I'll think of more later.
