Topic: How to get a good panning shot?

Hey guys.

I am trying to get this darn panning shot to look right, but it just won't. Do you have any ideas how to get this to look right?
I just need:

No camera setting panning (I've tried it. Doesn't work.)
No railroad tracks. (Don't got em. I don't feel like spending a ton of money to get those, either.)

Thanks,
-JK

Ah, I just talked to someone about this.
Just move the set, and to make it more precise, I suggest using a ruler.

Si665 has a good method.

Uses only bricks and a(n optional) ruler.

Re: How to get a good panning shot?

That's what I use - little rig for my camera, slide it along a ruler.

I assume you move the lights, too?

Well if you're going to get technical about it...

Yeah, you'd have to do that if you're doing a long pan. The few times I did it, it was just small things that you wouldn't notice unless you watched it twice.

That wouldn't work for some people as we don't all have large sets. I just use some flat tiles and a camera cradle. when I'm not doing a panning shot, I just use 2 bricks to keep the cradle in place.

I'm back. Possibly.

Yes, I agree with Jack, bumping (or "necroposting") is often frowned upon here at Bricks in Motion. And you may be knew, but that isn't an excuse to ignore the advice from older members. I already told you about this, and I hope you will listen, as I don't want you getting off on the wrong foot, for your experience on this site should be a good one.

Re: How to get a good panning shot?

Don't mean to sound Arrogant or anything but a pan shot is not what you think it is, a pan is a movement which scans a scene horizontally. The camera is placed on a tripod, which operates as a stationary axis point as the camera is turned. What you are taking about is in fact a Dolly Shot.

Killed by the husband, drowned by the ocean, shot by his own son, he used the poison in his tea an kissed him goodbye, that's my kind of story, It's no fun 'til someone dies.

Re: How to get a good panning shot?

Daniel is (almost) right. Here's a good image that shows most of the more conventional movements a camera makes (image found on this excellent website on script writing)

http://www.mnstate.edu/johnsdan/dtv/ScriptLayout/cmove.gif

Note that the crab movement is more commonly referred to as tracking or trucking; this is the effect you're trying to achieve. Also, the boom movement is sometimes referred to as a pedestal shot.

Re: How to get a good panning shot?

I just move the camer 1/4 of a stud and then i get an awesome pan, but then i have to put it up to 24 FPS but it looks AWESOME. don't bother moving the set, that's a waist of time

A Life? Cool! Where can I download one of those from?

A good idea would be to watch xxxfancypantsxxx tutorial on youtube.  It helped me.
