Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

That could work, EH, keeping in mind the warning about gimmicks.  Obviously if a bunch of people do something like that then it's not going to be enough on its own to make a good entry.

TIME TOUR: FINISHED!

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

It's one of those things that are kind of hard to put your finger on.

I remember a while back there was a brickfilm that used a cut-out picture of minifigs in the animation instead of a physical minifig. It looked like a traditional 2D drawing walking across a desk. That was a pretty cool film and different to other films of its time.

If you had a camera that allowed you to take timed exposures, you could use that to take very dark frames with long exposures to get a very different look to video and use that to present a standard beginning/middle/end story. You could have matrix-style "what is real" story with lots of elements in the animation that are notnormally found in a brickfilm (such as the old 'Magic Portal' brickfilm which went outside for a few scenes.

Part of it is what you present, part of it is how you present it. And it is all about being creative. You could try having a look at some surrealist paintings to see what they are like (just don't stick your minifigs in the oven!), you take a trip to your local art gallery - you might even want to pop down to your local community college (or your school) and speak to one of the art teachers. Just tell them point blank - "I'm trying to make a stop motion animation film with an avant-garde theme but I am having trouble underststanding what avant-garde means". I'm sure they'd be thrilled to explain it to you.

Smile and say hello to people. It costs you nothing and can brighten their day.

Would this be the film?

Aaaw that's touching that you thought of me.

I still don't think this is a good theme that will further advance the art of brickfilming.
It's more likely to get some very strange and confusing submissions where it's improvements in animation and story telling that bricksfilms need to get away from the YouTube culture.

All that said it won't make any difference to me it's more likely that giraffes will parade out of my back passage than I would enter a BiM competition. Many here seem to be struggling with the concept. I wonder how many of the BiM administration will put an entry in to illustrate they know what avante-garde is.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Staff besides myself are free to enter since they're not required to judge and aren't helping with the running of the contest in any other way.  Like I said though we're not trying to make people stick strictly to mimicking the avant-garde art movement, so to "illustrate they know what avante-garde is" would not be in line with the purpose of this contest.  It's more about the idea behind it, which is to try new things.

Everybody is entitled to an opinion but almost constant negativity isn't particularly helpful.  You've shown a lack of understanding in the past with comments about THAC and the BiMAs, and said that you "know [you're] being a jerk" so I think it's tough for any of us to put too much stock in what you say.

But anyway, your suggestion that I'm expecting people to all get this and make it work well is a little off-base, I expected the theme to challenge and even confuse some people but the thinking is that we have contests like AniExer-size for the easier, more conventional kinds of themes that people will be able to pick up on quickly.  The long-term time window for this contest lends itself to larger projects that people who are likely to struggle with the theme may not be up for anyway, though they're welcome to enter.  To quote myself from the discussion of this contest with staff:

Avant-Garde will probably only generate decent or better films from a handful relatively talented people, and might even somewhat hurt the overall watchability of entries (because it is a difficult theme).  But I'm tired of themes that are just blandly included in a very standard-issue film through a bit of dialog.  Judging from past contests, many entrants tend to churn out a script in a day or two without much thought so they can get started on filming, and I'd like for that to change.  Any video contest with good prizes and ample promotion gets scores of bad entries and often few good ones, judging from other contests I've entered.  I don't think it's avoidable in contests that have no entry fee and can be entered by anybody.

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

That's already been done at least once, it won the Ani-exercise contest.

I've made my decision to do something java based, and I've gaot 10 weeks to figure out everything I need to film, edit and get ready so that I can put it all together on the computers at school next year.

My main worry is that someone is going to come up with a similiar concept of my story, or also so somthing java based. Would we better off posting the whole idea on the forum to make it known that's the film you're working on? Or keeping it away from the forums?

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

Ah, wow.
When I first read the theme for this contest, I laughed so hard. More for the irony. My school's art department is obsessed with the concept, and is really the only thing I learn in any of the arts.

That being said, I think a more suiting and simple definition for avantgarde is simply "Ahead of it's time."

Though I sure most people already have the general idea, but it needs to be thought of like so:
At this point in history, we have many technologies and advancements. 20 years ago, something like an iPod would have never been  thought of. This is because the iPod came later on in history, thus it was ahead of that time. Something is avantgarde when it is an advancement never conceived of and ii in no way similar to anything that exists at the time.

To be honest, I really doubt anyone will create something that is truly avantgarde (myself included) within this contest, but its more of a matter of getting as close as we can.
By now, if a new video is called a brickfilm, it cannot be called avantgarde (I suppose this would be up to interpretation, but that's my personal view on it based on what Ive been taught).

You can't just think outside the box. You have to think outside this world.
Good luck to all~

Well, we shouldn't only rely on those guys to make a classic. We'll know we do, I'm sure there'll be members that will a classic if they entered. ( I won't call any names)

Re: BiM 2010: Avant-Garde [CLOSED]

I'm pleased to announce that we have an additional prize for the prize package!  The developers of Dragon Stop Motion have agreed to sponsor this contest with a license of Dragon 2.0 for the grand prize.  This is a very generous offer, Dragon is top-of-the-line stop motion software and has become increasingly popular among professionals since its release.
