Topic: CGI Help

I figure this is the right place for this thread.
Um, so I want to green screen some CGI bricks onto a video. But It's a .3ds file so I can't import it into wax. Is there anyway to turn the .3ds file into a .avi file?

Re: CGI Help

I have been wondering the same thing
cause i have always wanted to make a film using cgi like plant or something i just can't figure out how to do it from blender

Re: CGI Help

Unfortunately, it's not as simple as turning a .3ds file into an .avi -- that's sort of like like asking if you can automatically convert a word document of your movie's screenplay into a movie based on it.  You'll need to import the model into a 3D animation / rendering program, such as Blender or Anim8or, and from there you would creating a lighting setup for it, do any camera and animation work, and render it for a video.

LeoCad can export .3ds and .obj formats, both are pretty commonly used in 3D applications.  Anim8or and Blender should both be able to read one of these formats - Anim8or is the easier one to learn, but Blender is much more powerful.  I personally use DAZ's software Carrara, which has a pretty good blend of power and ease of use, but it's not free.

Re: CGI Help

I got all that but how would you put it into the movie like position it like in your movies or like in plant by VN and Leo

Re: CGI Help

It really depends on the software, most of them have some kind of compositing tools for this.  Usually it's very easy to at least layer CG on top of the video by just setting the video as a backdrop or something.
