Topic: Need help with opening scene.

Hey guys, hope you're all well.

I'm making my next video which is based on WW2 Stalingrad and the Volga River. I'm essentially recreating the opening scene from Call of Duty 1 (link below) and I'm wondering how to animate it successfully  i.e. with the rowing boat and background.
Should I green screen or just have a huge set? Any ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Need help with opening scene.

I'm not the most skilled animator, but if I wanted to do this scene, I would try to do a set with miniatures, like some of the background scenery you can see in various known brickfilms. I think the choice depends on two factors:

1) do you intend to do the scene in a continous, always moving, FPS-style take? In that case, I would opt for a full set with miniaturised backgrounds, because if you use greenscreens it means you would also need to move the background picture around just as the camera pans.

2) How good is your greenscreen tech? Do you also want topit the planes flying somehow?

Hey LegoStudiosP, thanks for the response!

I do agree on your choice of using miniatures.
I really do want to try NOT to use green screen as I like to make my films as official as possible if that makes sense.
I will be editing some scenes with the plane flying overhead but that's about it.
The only trouble I'm having, as you say, is shooting it as one continuous scene. I don't want it like an FPS though, I want the beginning scene to just focus on the general and his speech so I guess the camera would be fairly similar to the FPS one used in the scene.

Re: Need help with opening scene.

Maybe you can try and use the beginning scene from Saving Private Ryan to get an idea of some camera angles and shots. They do a great job recording and probably one of the most detailed recreations of a WW2 style invasion.

Here is the link to the scene. Its 20 minutes long but its worth watching.

Re: Need help with opening scene.

Thanks for the reply,

I've seen Saving Private Ryan countless times but I feel like I can't use it to help me with this animation. I just find it too different to this but I get where you're coming from. Some of the closer up angles they use in the Higgins boats could help me and I could film in a similar style.

Use trans orange 2x2 dish elements on the ends of gun barrels for one frame to make gunfire.  That's all the help I can offer.  I don't know anything about Call of Duty.
