Topic: Locking topics?

It seems lots of topics here get locked for no reason.

latest example:

http://www.bricksinmotion.com/forums/to … rtman-hot/

While this isn't the greatest topic (but its in off topic) ; it didn't violate any rules posted on this forum and there was no reason given for the locking...

Can you guys post rules or something? It seems pretty ridiculous to just arbitrarily lock topics..

The rules do not cover the random lockings that happen here frequently.

I realize that there was nothing obscene in the thread yet, but judging from the "hottest actress" thread of a few months back, this sort of thing tends to be a can of worms we would rather not have to open.  Rest assured I have pretty extensive guidelines for the moderators.  I don't think there are 'random' lockings here frequently, I know Nathan Wells locked a thread but that was not within the guidelines, so I unlocked it and explained this to him.  Feel free to cite any examples that have taken place since I became admin, though, I don't have time to follow every thread myself, but I have tried to cut back on the locking of threads when it's not needed.

Re: Locking topics?

I gotta say, I support the locking of that thread.   You start talking about Natalie Portman with a bunch of adolescent male brickfilming nerds?

Well, that, my friends, is brewing a disaster of apocalyptic proportions.

Brian, I would hardly classify the locking of threads on this site as "random."  Some more examples would be nice to support your claim, but it's very rare that I'll see a locked topic that didn't deserve it.

I dont know, maybe

Re: Locking topics?

I had to look back four pages in the coffee shop to find another locked thread, thats 1 thread out of 120 which is lock, what is that 0.83% ?

Re: Locking topics?

I was under the impression that anything with 'soap' in it was a spam account. Seemed like a pretty mindbogglingly pointless thread to me anyhow that would just end in a maelstrom of preteens going 'ewww' over Natalie Portman while teens posted suggestive pics ala the 'Hottest Actress' and similar threads.

Why do people keep complaining about threads being locked mini/rolleyes .

Re: Locking topics?

I'm still waiting for a topic to degrade to the point where people actually start calling the actresses in question.

Re: Locking topics?

Well, those questions and their prevailing conversations could have been carried out in the Cafe Corner, don't you think?

Re: Locking topics?

Brian, please tell me about the validity of that thread.  I encourage you.  Enlighten me as to how that post could have led to a worthwhile conversation.

Re: Locking topics?

Gonna have to go with Dave on this one, particularly given the previous history of the person who started that thread.  It's ok to have a little fun but I suspect having an entire thread about the Flat Earth Society is a bit much for most people here, if somebody really wanted to mention it the Café Corner might be a good place.  If you enjoy that sort of thing though, Brian, feel free to hang out with Aled Owen and co. edit: sadly, it appears their forum is down.

There are thousands of spammy forums out there that accept and encourage that kind of posting, this isn't one of them.  I would add that while this isn't the least restrictive forum I've been to, moderation here is not nearly as strict as many community forums I frequent.

The thread that was locked linked to two forums devoted to the flat earth. Surely there is a worthwhile conversation if (at least) two sites are based on it.

Would you lock a 9/11 conspiracy thread? Its off topic people! Maybe BIM needs LDF?

Re: Locking topics?

Wait, there are actually people who still think the earth is flat? o.O

As for a 9/11 conspiracy thread, I think a thread like that should be locked, it would only lead to arguements and it would probably upset a lot of people. The same could be said of that flat earth society thing, though I doubt anybody on BiM thinks the earth is flat. (Sorry if anybody does think the earth is flat, this post wasn't meant to offend you. mini/wink)

Yes, and the debates between those who do and those who don't are hilarious.
