Topic: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

After a few months of planning and pre-production. I've finally begun filming on my latest brickfilm, tentatively titled "Vega Zyro." The story revolves around Lance and Vega, a brother-and-sister bounty hunting team. After an attempt at capturing a deadly fugitive ends in tragedy, Vega is seemingly left with only one option: vengeance. But what happens when she finally gets her chance at revenge?

I estimate that the completed film will be somewhere between eight to ten minutes in length. I'm doing all I can to make this my best work yet. I'm shooting it at 1080p with my new Logitech HD Pro c920 webcam. This will also be my first story featuring a female character as the protagonist. Also, as I mentioned in the casting call, this film is a bit sadder and darker than my previous work. Nevertheless, I'd still consider it family friendly.

For now, here are a few frames from the opening scene.  I'm planning on uploading more production frames, test animations, pictures of sets, etc., as work progresses. Stay tuned! mini/wink

Looks awesome. You have an estimated released date yet?

Happy to see that brickfilmers are making more 10 min+ original brickfilms.

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

Thanks for the compliments guys mini/smile

@funmiproductions I've only just began production, so I really can't set even an estimated release date quite yet. I'll get a better idea as filming progresses. Another reason to stay tuned mini/wink

Here's a really quick test I did last night. I was going for an in-camera motion blur effect. I'm planning on messing around with it more later. Since this was my first attempt, I didn't bother with the masking. Any input is welcome. mini/smile

This looks really great! I love the frames. They have a cluttered claustrophobic feel which really suits the spaceship atmosphere. I'm also looking forward to following the production.
That motion blur test was really good as well by the by mini/yes

Looks really good! Unrelated to the motion blur, which I think is pretty perfect, honestly, I feel like the door should open a lot faster. Space doors always feel more spacey when they open quickly.

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

Oh, fancy motion blur!
Well done motion blur can add a lot to a film, as well as give it a distinct style; a style that will fit this film perfectly.
You've nailed it this time, but inconsistent motion blur can ruin the visuals, so make sure it it all looks this good.

Were I to offer some advice on the animation itself, you may want to add a bit more 'bounce' to Vega's stop.
She flies in, and then it seems that the momentum vanishes once she leans back up.

Also, the door animation is fine in my opinion, it's smooth and consistent, which is great and a lot harder to accomplish than many think. But since the ship looks abandoned/ruined, you may want some inconsistency and roughness with some of the other doors. Not all the time, but one or two perhaps. Some smooth, some damaged, some broken apart, a bit of variety would probably go a long way in adding some nice detail.

Oh, I forgot to audition!  Easter break wiped my memory!  Do you still need a voice??!!

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

Thanks Guys! mini/smile

@backyardlegos I made the doors open somewhat slowly in an attempt to add to the feel that the ship is old and in a state of disrepair. I did have them open faster in my second attempt, however, and I think it looks much better.

@Prichard Studios I did try to give her a bit of a bounce at the end, but I agree, it wasn't quite enough. Good suggestion as far as inconsistency among doorways opening. I'll keep that in mind. mini/wink

@HoldingOurOwn Yep, I still haven't chosen a voice actor for the final character yet (the villain). Feel free to audition! For anyone else interested, you can find my casting call here.

Anyhow, here is my second attempt at the motion blur shot. Personally, I think it turned out much better, particularly the landing.

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

Double post!

So, after a little persuasion, I'm pretty sure I'll go with a wider aspect ratio for this film (1920 x 800, as opposed to 1920 x 1080). I've already shot the first scene, but I checked and it looks fine cropped, so I'll have no need to redo it. Here's a shot I took earlier. I'd be interested in hearing what others think of the wider ratio. mini/smile

From what I've seen so far, I think the wider aspect ratio will really suit the film well. I love that frame. mini/smile

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

I have started using 1920x800. It's a great resolution to work with! Excellent choice!

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

See, I told you a wider aspect ratio would work well for your film!

Technically (and you already know this, but I am going to say it for the sake of those reading), 1920x800 is kind of an odd aspect ratio. If you wanted an authentic aspect ratio (like one used on film), you would use 1920x817. Though. I suppose the 17 frames don't matter too terribly much. mini/wink

Looks great! Glad to see longer brickfilms are beginning to make a comeback.

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

Small update:

I've been going kinda slow on this project lately, but I'm hoping to change that. I've now shot just over a minute of video and the opening scene is now done. Here's another still to hold you all over for now. mini/wink I'd also like to thank Cooked Cat for suggesting I go for a Dutch angle in this shot over in the "Critique My Frame!" thread. I think it really helped make it look better.

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

I'm always one for dutch angles, but that may be a tab much.
Unless the camera is slowly twisting from this to something less angled, in which case it'll be great.

Re: Vega Zyro - A short Sci-Fi Film - Production Topic

It would be neat if you tried completely vertical shots. Especially when in hallways like that. Might add some depth. Looking good!

The looks of the sets make them seem difficult to animate in.
