Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

Good to see there's a Directory, but I have a small problem...
I just submitted my film to the Directory, but at the end when you select "yes" for posting a topic of your film, it automatically posts one. I thought I had to make one myself (or post the URL from a topic), but I already made a topic about that film a while ago. So now there are two topics about the same film.
Would it be possible, when you submit a film to the Directory to post a topic about your film manually (and could someone delete the topic I just wrote in the link please)?
Thanks.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

If you already have your film posted in the films forum, you were supposed to select NO. Then afterwards you can go and edit your film and put the name of the original topic.

I looked at the usercp, but you can't change the forum topic there.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

Sorry for the double post, but after a slight bit of testing out the submission system and the directory I stumbled upon a couple of things that slightly bugged me. Don't get me wrong, the film directory is perfect as it is now, but there are just some tiny things that I can't stand for a bit.

1. Some slight errors in the dates
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BertL/stuff2/erroriguess.jpg
This occures with some films, like (at the moment) Stop and Motion by Helico, and Cashman by Philip Heinrich. Oddly enough, when you go to the film page the date is shown correctly. Not sure what happened there, but it is kind of annoying.

2. Resorting doesn't stick very well
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BertL/stuff2/sortsystemerroriguess.jpg
So whenever I change the sort thingie from 'pretty detailed' to 'list' (or whatever you want to name it), the thing doesn't stick. By that I mean that when I sort the thing as a list, as soon as I go to (for example) a film page or any other page, the sorting system automatically goes back to 'detailed'. This isn't terribly annoying, but it's a slight drawback as people who prefer lists over the detailed things will have to click that button in the top right corner every single time. Every. Single. Time.

3. No control panel ;_;
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BertL/stuff2/controlpanelthing.jpg
There's no control panel wherever you go in the Film directory. Again, this is slightly annoying especially when you want to go to your control panel after you've gone to a film page. Nothing big, but still.

4. No "edit film page" link or anything like that
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BertL/stuff2/noeditfilms.jpg
I just submitted Harbinger (and two other films) to the directory, but when I saw that something on the page was wrong, I couldn't find any link to edit the film's page or whatever. I guess this is similar to the third point (no control panel), but it's still slightly annoying. mini/smile

5. "Released" versus "Added to directory" dates
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BertL/stuff2/dateswrong.jpg
Probably my biggest issue with the directory to date. In the directory list, the release date is (probably) what you can pick when submitting a film. But on the film page, the release date is the same as the date you added your film to the directory. This is pretty concerning as it gives lots of confusion and stuff like that. This should really be fixed IMO.

6. Limited editing abilities
http://www.majhost.com/gallery/BertL/stuff2/limitedediting.jpg
Ok so I wanted to edit the film page for Harbinger because I made a couple of mistakes on it. First problem was "Lord\_of\_the\_LEGO" which has lots of backslashes (probably a PHP problem or something). Second problem was mistagging Rolz's involvement in the film as "Cameo appearance", I want that to say just "Cameo". I found out that I couldn't fix the first problem as it just reverted back to the backslash riddled name. Also, I couldn't fix the second problem because the cast/crew thing seems unfixable. mini/sad

That's pretty much everything I could find for now, though. I love it.

Also, a question. When you edit the film page, will your forum thread thingie be edited as well? That would be quite handy, I think.

edited third point
edited question
edited fourth point
edited fifth point
edited sixth point the list just keeps growing lolz

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

I also found a small bug. When you go to the 'Older' page and click on a film, then return to the previous page again, it takes you back to the first film page instead. That means you have to press 'Older' again to get the correct page. Is this fixable?

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

Ok just to make sure the staff doesn't miss it: my list has six points now instead of the original two.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

I thought points 1), 2), and 5) had been resolved, apparently not.  In theory, the date you submitted the film to the directory is never supposed to be visible, it is only there for the purpose of determining the list order of the films, obviously there are a few errors to be worked out in that regard.  I agree the on point 3), we'll probably integrate the controls into some other pages eventually.  Regrading point 4), this won't be a problem if we put a link to the controls on these pages, the idea, though, that everything can be edited from the control panel, not from the film pages themselves.  Regarding 6), we do plan to make pages fully editable eventually but that wasn't something that was feasible to have ready in time for launch.

Regarding tying the film description to the first post: I would consider that undesirable.  Sometimes I have found myself wanting to include notes in the first post of the thread that I would not want in the film description, and it'd get annoying to have to revert it every time I make a change to the page description.

I've deleted the new thread.  I think you should be able to add the original thread from the user CP now.  If people will just check "No" at the end of the form for films that already have threads, this won't be a problem.

I like it, it's alot better than BF.com's for sure.

Smeagol double posted, strange.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

Double-posting is often the best way to address two completely separate points by different people, especially in a thread that is getting lots of posts.  It's just annoying if the second post is only a slight addendum to the first post.

The Staff page needs some major fixing, for instance:

The page title says "New Page".

The modules cannot be moved.

The content overlaps the right hand modules.

Yeah, I noticed the "New Page" thing a little later.  The modules are currently only mobile on the front page, that's something we'd like to work on eventually but it's been a source of some trouble.  There are a few formatting issues to be resolved on that page, and I would like to eventually make some major changes to it.  However I have fixed the module overlap issue for now.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

I just noticed the unaccepted films so far goes fro 40 to 82 (http://www.bricksinmotion.com/films/view/82/).  The reviewers have a lot to review.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

I'm sorry, I didn't mean to submit my trailer.

I was testing the film submission, and didn't notice that the button said submit instead of next.

Please, reject my trailer, and forgive me.

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

Basically correct, Brickme, I was working with a template Schlaeps gave me but it couldn't handle more than a few lines of text, meaning I had to put it all in a table, so it might have been more trouble than it's worth.  I'm going to rewrite most of that page when I get a chance anyway.

I think I have spotted a mistake. Unless i'm just looking at this wrong: The Newest films are on page 1 but when new films are added they will go onto page 1 and the old page 1 films will become page 2 and page 2 will become page 3 and so on. This means if I was to give someone a link to page 2, it might not be the same films when they look at it. to fix this it new films will have to go onto the highest numbered page and be descending. If it's any consolation brickfilms.com made the same mistake and they still haven't finished fixing it, they just put the oldest films on the first page of the directory.

I really like the look of the directory and can't wait to finish a film I feel is worthy of the directory. Kudos to all involved. mini/smile

Re: The BiM Film Directory is now open!

Yeah, that's something that can probably be fixed, but needing to link to a page of the listing is such a rare occasion (as far as I can tell) that we'll be dealing with the more urgent ones first.
