Topic: Changing Focus in Camera

I'm filming. Stopped procrastinating and followed Nike's philosophy.

I haven't done this in a LONG time, so I found my weakness'.

However, I've never figured out how to change the focus in shots. I showed my mom & she thought they were some blurry photos, but what I was trying to do was gradually change the focuse from the background to the foreground.

How would you do this in stopmotion?

My life goes by 24fps.

Re: Changing Focus in Camera

That depends on what camera you have. On a DSLR, there is a focus ring, on a Logitech webcam, it comes with software called Camera Control (some something like that) that allows you to do manual focus. If you're using a point and shoot, I can't help you there.

Re: Changing Focus in Camera

Oops! I forgot to say that I use a c920.

I do use the focus control, but it sort of goes in big increments (at least for stop motion).

Re: Changing Focus in Camera

Yep, webcams in general can only adjust focus in big chunks.
It's a problem that DSLRs don't have, and one you'll just have to deal with.

That being said, if the focus change is big enough, (From really far to really close) you can just use what increments it allows and most people won't notice the difference. Also, you may try taking several pictures, then fading really quickly between each of them in post.

Okay thanks, guys.

I got the best from it. It doesn't look too bad.

Hopefully I can get a DSLR next year.

Re: Changing Focus in Camera

My webcam has like 30 focus settings to it in the software control so it can be really finely tuned.

The zoom however only has 10 discrete settings and that bites bad.  mini/sad  I can do fast and slow focus, but for zoom I resort to physically moving the camera - not a software zoom - and that is so much harder/longer.  mini/confused
