Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Apparently the entire plot of the movie got leaked as well? I'm not going to click that link about the LEGO sets, and I think I'm going to try to avoid everything else SW-related until December, too.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Yeah, the plot did leak, but I'm not going to read it. I didn't post a link to it here just so no one felt tempted to read it and thus ruin the past two and a half years of their life.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Was the plot leak recent?

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Yes, it was.

Stay away from brickset. I was trying not to look at the images of this set, then they went and put in on the front page. mini/madhead

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I'm very excited to see Star Wars on the big screen again after so long. I love speculating about the characters and story yet I am trying to not get the whole movie spoiled. I walk on a thin line I suppose. I just pick and choose which spoilers I take in. Like the one about Han...jk Anyway I am hyped and I am hopeful it will be good.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I just hope they don't kill Harrison off in this. I also hope he doesn't attempt to land solo...

Yeah.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Han, Luke, or Leia MUST DIE!!!!! In Episode 1 Qui-Gon was killed. In Episode 4 Obi-Wan was killed. So, unless they want to destroy tradition, one of the "big three" must die!

It's classic wizard trope.  The teacher/mentor is killed to progress the story.

They might not kill them, but make them 'hand the torch' to a new generation.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Han was meant to die in 6. which would have made it a better film. so I hope, they are more loyal to the story, then to keeping people alive.

To be honest, I would be EXTREMELY upset if they didn't kill off at least one of the "Big Three".

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

they kind of have to, luke might be a good choice, given he is the only real'ish' jedi, if the new sith take's him out, it'll be up to the new blood to stop them.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

It could be like the old Expanded Universe where Chewbacca dies, but the three live on.  I don't no.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Look at it this way: If Luke Skywalker is the Anakin of the OT, and Leia is the Padme of the OT, that would mean Han is the Obi-Wan of the OT, and which of those three PT characters got killed in Episode 4? HAN MUST DIE!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't really see what you mean by that. Yes, some characters in SW (particularly the original trilogy) are heavily inspired by character archetypes, but I don't think Disney will be keen to repeat exactly the same archetypes again with the new trilogy.

Plus, Padme died in the prequels. Sorry.

But to be honest, there are far more creative and scarring ways of traumatising characters than just killing them or their loved ones. Characters could be physically disfigured, disabled or left comatose after the climax and have to live with the consequences. Or they could develop PTSD, and either give in to it or learn to move forward. Or, if you want to go down the Angel/TVD route, they could be locked in a coffin and thrown out to sea (which is pretty traumatic for an immortal who can't drown).

Han dying in Episode 6 flat-out wouldn't have made it a better film in itself; it's how his death was written that could potentially have made the film better or worse. Imagine if he had instead simply gone missing? How would Luke and Leia have reacted? You could still have had the Ewok celebration scene, but with the strongly-implied promise of a new adventure (that we don't even need to see) where Luke and Leia try to find Han, or something to that effect. Or,

Cowboys and Aliens is a great example of this. When Olivia Wilde's character sacrifices herself at the end, she does so after not only being set up as a strong emotional attachment for Daniel Craig, but as something for Craig to actually live for now the rest of his family's dead. Killing her off just made the ending feel even more hollow and less like a victory than it already would have.

And using a specific Star Wars example, Padme's death in Episode III made a mediocre film ending just plain bad. Not only did it contradict Episode 6 (as I remember it, but that's beside the point) but it was rushed, badly-acted, poorly-written; all those factors together meant this potentially emotionally-impactful death that could have rescued the film instead sealed its fate.

Personally I dislike ridiculously happy endings, but I also dislike character deaths for the sake of character deaths. Killing off a character isn't always the answer, and the more creative you are in bending or breaking the trope, the more your audience will appreciate it. That said, though, there are just as many character deaths that do work as those that don't,

Text about character deaths

Jampot, I'd be interested to hear some deaths that you think don't work because I don't think that it happens enough.  I think you need characters to die in order to make the other characters seem mortal enough to be put in danger.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

As long as fan-appeasement isn't involved by Disney, I'll be happy!
Too often I've heard fans complain about how they want the big three back in the spotlight for the new Trilogy, which I'm against. Why though? Because it seems logical to focus a new Trilogy on fresh new characters, with a new storyline kicked off from Episode VI. That is probably why Disney called the EU non-cannon (or bantha fodder in my opinion) the EU left little room for new story telling, and it irritated me that fans wanted an adaption of the Thrawn Trilogy, which I didn't like at all.
If you ask me, I think Leia (or probably Queen Leia) will die in The Force Awakens. How? Why? I don't have a clue, other than my gut instinct.
