I've been debating getting a better microphone for the purpose of better quality voice recording.
But on the other hand, I would also like to record my own sounds. Either in the neighborhood or around the house.
I guess what I'm asking is what are my options for semi-portability?
Also, what do you guys do when you want to record a sound outside or at home?
The best option these days is to get ahold of a portable digital recorder, either a voice recorder from something like Amazon or maybe a bit more professional, in which latter case they market them as "field recorders." Tascam and Olympus are pretty solid brands. I've been using this: http://www.amazon.com/M-Audio-9900-5227
rotrack+ii for the past 5 years and it's been a great asset to me thus far. I've used it with an external microphone(s) for everything from voice recording to recording ambiances and sound effects on location. Before that i used to use a camcorder with a microphone plugged in to record sounds on tape, which wasn't really practical.
The best field recorders are the ones that you can connect external microphones to; look for one of those instead of a model that has built-in mics.
