Topic: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

I know there are a lot of brickfilmers who use the iPhone to make their videos.

With the proliferation of newer iPhones, perfectly fine older models are expended and drop in cost.  I was considering getting an older generation iPhone to try to shoot brickfilms, in order to avoid camera jumpiness and light flicker.

I had a few questions:

1) I want to film in 1920x1080 resolution.  Are any models capable of this exact resolution (preferred) or greater (acceptable)?  Which ones?

2) May one use an iPhone for image storage, photography, etc., without subscribing to a phone network?

3) Is there a way to take a photo without touching the iPhone, or can it be done without much pressure on the device?

4) Does the lighting remain consistant when making films with the iPhone?  Does the user have flexibility with manual settings?  Can you suggest some videos for me to view made with iPhones that put these concerns at ease?

5) This is important to me: Can I export the photos easily to a computer to do post-production in my favorite Sony video editor?

Thanks, BiM community.  Any other information that you may find relevant that I'm ignorant of would also help me a great deal.

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

Hey, Holding Our Own! I've heard your pleas for help in regards to brickfilming on an iPhone, and I've created a handy list to help you get started:

Step 1: Don't buy an iPhone.

Step 2: Buy a webcam, probably from someone like logitech.

Seriously, you shouldn't waste your money on getting an iPhone for brickfilming. They have no way to really finely control focus, brightness, will most likely flicker a lot, and the only real way you can take a picture with an iPhone without touching it , to my knowledge, is to buy an iPad and the iStopMotion app, with allows you to sync them up and use one for a camera and one as a preview monitor.

You're much better off buying a webcam and using some capture software to take pictures. Capture software includes the likes of free programs such as Helium From and MonkeyJam, all the way up to pricier but better featured ones like Dragon Frame.

Logitech makes some really good webcams that I'd recommend. I've used their slightly older C910 model since I started brickfilming back in 2011 and it's great. While you still won't get the absolute total control that you'd get with a DSLR, you'll still get bang for your buck and they're highly recommended.

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

Why they heck would you want to film on a sensor the size of pinhead?

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

really want to pull off that classic Orson Wells look, but only while using an ultra wide lens?

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

I too have to agree with Sonjira. Webcams are much cheaper, better quality, more universal, have software and hands-free capturing, full manual controls, etc. The list goes on. The advantages to buying a webcam outnumber the advantages to buying an iPhone. Unless you're going to buy an iPhone anyway for your own personal use, then sure, you can use them, but there's no way of not touching the device, and no manual camera settings. I don't know if iStopmotion allows manual camera settings, but after paying 50 dollars for iStopmotion, and the iPhone, it's just cheaper to get a webcam and use free software (there are many free stop-motion software out there, like MonkeyJam or HeliumFrog).

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

I never thought anyone used an iphone for serious stop motion.  I could be wrong.

Im a hd web cam user with no intention of switching any time soon.

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

Okay.  good to know. The iPhone was going to strictly be used for brickfilming.  Good help everyone

so changing the subject:
Questions about external (usb) web cams: I want 1920x1080 resolution or greater.  Any fairly inexpensive ones that can shoot at that resolution?  Picture quality is important for me, too.

Logitech C920

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

Yes, get a Logitech webcam. I guess the C920 is good, but I have never tried it. I have the Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000. A lot of Brickfilmers use this webcam, and it has god quality. Suburb Animation Studios used it to make videos like "The Machine". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7v0koRxTwU

Seeing as they don't make the QuickCam Pro 9000 anymore, the C920 is the way to go. It has Carl Zeiss Optics, which is good. http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/h … 20?crid=34

The C920 is newer and can shoot 1080 instead of just 720.

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

I think the carl zeiss optics + 1080p is more important than resolution.

Frankly, when things are mashed by youtube i bet you couldnt tell the difference between a budget 720p and a twice-the-price 1080p.

It would feel sweet to own a 1080p but.  mini/tongue

No there is a huge difference between 720p and 1080p. 1080p is 4 times the resolution and on a full HD monitor or above the difference is noticeable on YouTube.

What do you mean that 1080p is more important than resolution? That is the resolution. 1920x1080. I have a 1920x1080 monitor, and I can definitely tell the difference (yes, on YouTube. YouTube doesn't really compress videos unless you are watching it at a low quality. If you have the badwidth and the patience to let the 1080p version of the video to buffer, and have a 1080p monitor, it's superb quality. Just check out my videos. mini/tongue ). But it you want to use 720p anyway, it's ok too. It's still simi-HD, as long as you don't upscale it to 1080p, then it's fine.

Re: Questions for iPhone Brickfilmers

Thanks for the help so far.  I definitely want to shoot in 1080p, and I will be posting to vimeo, so the quality is preserved better.  Are there other webcams besides the logitech one?
