Personally, I find them extremely disappointing (with the exception of The Phantom Menace) but hey, I guess I'm a stick in the mud.
There was room for a continuation, but it had a pretty definitive end.
Spoiler (click to read)
Makuta gets a moon scraped against the back of his head and dies, Spherus Magna is reformed, Matoran and Agori become one society, Mata Nui goes to sleep after using the last of his power, combined with the Mask of Life, to bring life back to the Bara Magna desert, and Tahu's like "now we make our own destiny".
Greg's confirmed that if he'd had the time, the next storyline would have followed Takanuva as he tried to stop a civil war between the Great Beings. The few web serials released after the official 'end' of BIONICLE started to set this story up, with a big reveal that one of the 2006 Matoran, a guy called Velika, was a Great Being all along and starts going on a killing spree, whilst framing Toa Lesovikk.
Then that does give me some hope for the theme in that they did leave some room for a continuation (unlike Ninjago!).
I don't wont to burst anyone's happiness about the return of Bionicle but I do have to ask if this may actually be detrimental to the theme. Ninjago was my favorite Lego theme, I loved the return of ninja to Lego and I laved the story and TV show that went with it.

Oh dear....
Eh, I actually really like Ninjago. The Serpentine minifigs were cool, and there have been some good sets for parts that I've wanted (like the Venomari Shrine, which I ended up buying two of).
I was horribly disappointed by Ninjago. When I first heard about it I was super excited, seeing as I thought it would be something like the classic Ninja theme, but instead they ended up making this horrifically cheesy and massively cliched theme with weird cartoony skeletons and ridiculous characters (Fang-Suei? Seriously? ). And it only got worse in the second year. The Serpentine, in my opinion, have got to be some of the ugliest minifigures ever made, along with Clone Wars and Chima ones. The storyline is pretty in-depth, I guess, but it isn't a patch on the likes of Exo-Force and BIONICLE.
But the fact that it now actually looks good next to themes such as Chima doesn't really give me much hope for the future of LEGO themes...
Having said all that, I did like the look of some of the sets, such as the Fire Temple, and the new Temple thingy out now (love the look of red, gold, and dark green together). I did get the Rattlecopter which gave me lots of good parts (as well as a strong contender for the ugliest minifigure in existence), and kinda wish I'd picked up the Venomari Shrine as well now. And I did like the Ninjago world in LEGO Universe...
Anyway, sorry for hijacking this thread with my Ninjago hate, we should get back on topic. It seems that there is a lot of evidence pointing to the return of BIONICLE, to the point where it's been for all intents and purposes confirmed, albeit not officially... yet. LEGO apparently isn't very good at keeping things under wraps in this instance. I'm happy to see this happening as I said before, although I'm not entirely sure about the redesign of what is apparently Tahu, especially the mask (I like the classic Hau look, myself). I just hope they preserve what made BIONICLE awesome and don't turn it into a horrifically cliched cheese-fest *coughcoughalaNinjagoandChimacoughcough*...
I never really liked Ninjago. I mean, what do ninjas have to do with tanks and motorcycles? Surely you can make nice sets without adding random modern stuff like that.

What's that .gif from/who's the dude in your avatar?
I am guessing Doctor Who.
It's Harold Finch, who is a character on the TV show Person of Interest, which is one of my all-time favourite TV shows and probably one of the best TV shows currently out there. (Seriously, it's amazing. You should definitely check it out. Do it now.) He's an eccentric software genius billionaire who built The Machine.
It also has an amazing soundtrack.
I happened to come across the gif randomly and thought it would be a witty reply. And I chose the profile pic because it's funny (or at least I thought it was funny when I was up at 2 AM and couldn't sleep...).

I don't know what the policy on leaked images is so I won't post them, but if you check the Bionicle tag on tumblr, there are some leaked preliminary images.
And they look ugly.
I don't know if you guys have seen this, but Bionicle is being announced in 4 days. Check out LEGO's Google+ page:
